    Abstract Castor seed is an important oil seed crop of dryland agriculture. To estimate the energy needs of this crop, two experiments were conducted with three tillage treatments under two farming systems, namely bullock and tractor farming. Under all the selected tillage treatments both for tractor and bullock farming systems, it was found that threshing, harvesting, manual weeding and seed bed preparation were the energy intensive operations. No-tillage treatments was found not only the least energy consuming package of practices but also resulted i n a comparatively high output-input energy ratio despite higher weed intensity. Further, tractor cultivation consumed a higher amount of energy as compared to bullock cultivation but did not result in higher production. The farmer may, therefore, continue with bullock cultivation unless he were to cover larger areas which cannot be commanded by the bullock power resources available to him.

    Abstract Sugarcane is a major crop cultivated globally and the residue left over after the crop harvest and extraction of juice is a good biomass source that can be used for the production of several useful chemicals. The sugarcane bagasse is an excellent substrate for the production of various biochemicals and enzymes through fermentation. Now major interest is focused on the utilization of these residue for biofuel production. The sugarcane crop residue is rich in cellulose and hemicellulose, hence it can be used for the production of bioethanol and other liquid transportation fuels. The present review gives a detailed account of the availability of sugarcane residue and various commercially important products that can be produced from this residue. It also provides recent developments in R&D on the bioconversion of sugarcane crop residue for value added products.

    Authors: S K, Barik; Mukunda Dev, Behera; D, Adhikari;

    Citrus is an important horticultural crop of India and is often prone to diseases, particularly under increased temperature scenarios. For developing disease-resistant Citrus varieties, conservation of wild relatives is extremely important. However, our knowledge on temperature tolerance of these wild relatives of Citrus to varied climate change scenarios is extremely limited. Therefore, we determined the climatic niche of six wild relatives of cultivated Citrus species (C. indica Tanaka, C. karna Rafin., C. latipes (Swingle) Tanaka, C. macroptera Montrouz., C. medica L., and C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck.) and identified the geographical areas in India that would remain climatically stable in future through ecological niche modeling (ENM). Raster data on 19 bioclimatic variables with a resolution of 0.04° were used to generate niche models for each Citrus species that delineated their potential distribution areas. Future species distribution predictions for the year 2050 were made using the climate change scenarios from the most appropriate climate models, i.e., IPSL-CM5A-LR and NIMR-HADGEM2-AO with four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Ensemble of current and future projections was used to identify climatically stable areas for each species. Precipitation-related bioclimatic variables were the key climatic determinants for the modeled distribution pattern. The consensus of current and future projections suggests that most areas with stable climates for the species in the future would be available in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura. Efforts for in situ conservation and establishment of germplasm banks and citrus orchards may be encouraged in these identified areas.

    SummaryCellular transport of ions, especially by ion channels, regulates physiological function. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, with 30 identified so far, are cation channels with high calcium permeability. These ion channels are present in metabolically active tissues including adipose tissue, liver, gastrointestinal tract, brain (hypothalamus), pancreas and skeletal muscle, which suggests a potential role in metabolic disorders including obesity. TRP channels have potentially important roles in adipogenesis, obesity development and its prevention and therapy because of their physiological properties including calcium permeability, thermosensation and taste perception, involvement in cell metabolic signalling and hormone release. This wide range of actions means that organ‐specific actions are unlikely, thus increasing the possibility of adverse effects. Delineation of responses to TRP channels has been limited by the poor selectivity of available agonists and antagonists. Food constituents that can modulate TRP channels are of interest in controlling metabolic status. TRP vanilloid 1 channels modulated by capsaicin have been the most studied, suggesting that this may be the first target for effective pharmacological modulation in obesity. This review shows that most of the TRP channels are potential targets to reduce metabolic disorders through a range of mechanisms.

    The potential of different agro-wastes like green grass (Cynodon dactylon (L.)), bagasse, algae (Enteromorpha spp.), banana stem and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in combination with cattle dung for methane production by anaerobic digestion have been evaluated. The results indicate that these wastes can be exploited for methane generation in combination with cattle dung. Best results were obtained with green grass when it was combined with cattle dung in the ratio of 1:4.

    Biomass derived from marine microalgae and macroalgae is globally recognized as a source of valuable chemical constituents with applications in the agri-horticultural sector (including animal feeds and health and plant stimulants), as human food and food ingredients as well as in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Algal biomass supply of sufficient quality and quantity however remains a concern with increasing environmental pressures conflicting with the growing demand. Recent attempts in supplying consistent, safe and environmentally acceptable biomass through cultivation of (macro- and micro-) algal biomass have concentrated on characterizing natural variability in bioactives, and optimizing cultivated materials through strain selection and hybridization, as well as breeding and, more recently, genetic improvements of biomass. Biotechnological tools including metabolomics, transcriptomics, and genomics have recently been extended to algae but, in comparison to microbial or plant biomass, still remain underdeveloped. Current progress in algal biotechnology is driven by an increased demand for new sources of biomass due to several global challenges, new discoveries and technologies available as well as an increased global awareness of the many applications of algae. Algal diversity and complexity provides significant potential provided that shortages in suitable and safe biomass can be met, and consumer demands are matched by commercial investment in product development.

    The tremendous rise in demand for energy has led to a scarcity of conventional sources of energy like fossil fuels, thereby pushing us in search of alternative sources of energy. Sun is the ultimate source of energy, and there is a need to harness it to sustain the growth of mankind. The purpose of this review is to examine different ways to harness solar energy and use it to dry various agricultural produce. A brief review of various types of solar dryers being used in India is presented in this article. With the advancement in science and technology, several inexpensive, efficient, and innovative solar drying devices for drying different agricultural products have been discussed. Solar dryers can reduce significant amounts of moisture and thus preserve the products for longer time periods. This reduces product wastage and enhances the productivity of farmers.

    Microalgae are considered promising feedstocks for biofuel and bio-product generation. The algal carbohydrates can be hydrolyzed into sugars before their fermentation into ethanol. In this study, nutrient limitation strategy was employed to evaluate the biochemical composition of Chlorella sorokiniana. Limiting nitrate (1.0 g/L KNO3) in the culture medium increased the total carbohydrate and starch content of microalga by 50.28 and 34.06%, respectively. However, this significantly lowered their yield due to low microalgal biomass production. Cultivation of C. sorokiniana cells with 4.0 g/L KNO3 as nitrogen source for 8 days was optimum for bioethanol production as the highest total carbohydrate yield of 422.44 mg/L was obtained under these conditions. Nitrate limitation (1.0 g/L KNO3) favored the increased production of high-value carotenoids in C. sorokiniana that could further contribute to improving the economics of the bioethanol production process. Feasibility studies for ethanol production from C. sorokiniana revealed that a maximum of 13.86 mg/mL of reducing sugars was extracted in the hydrolysate by treating the microalgal biomass with 2.8% sulfuric acid at 121 °C for 30 min. Fermentation of acid hydrolysate produced ethanol at a concentration of 2.91 mg/mL in 96 h with 41.16% of theoretical yield.

    With the increase in the world's population, demand for food and other products is continuously rising. This has put a lot of pressure on the agricultural sector. To fulfill these demands, the utilization of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has also increased. Consequently, to overcome the adverse effects of agrochemicals on our environment and health, there has been a shift towards organic fertilizers or other substitutes, which are ecofriendly and help to maintain a sustainable environment. Microalgae have a very high potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) capturing and thus, help in mitigating the greenhouse effect. It is the most productive biological system for generating biomass. The high growth rate and higher photosynthetic efficiency of the algal species compared to the terrestrial plants make them a wonderful alternative towards a sustainable environment. Moreover, they could be cultivated in photobioreactors or open ponds, which in turn reduce the demand for arable land. Biochar derived from algae is high in nutrients and exhibits the property of ion exchange. Therefore, it can be utilized for sustainable agriculture by partial substituting the chemical fertilizers that degrade the fertility of the soil in the long run. This review provides a detailed insight on the properties of algal biochar as a potential fertilizer for sustainable agriculture. Application of algal biochar in bio-refinery and its economic aspects, challenges faced and future perspective are also discusses in this study.
