    Abstract Global primary energy consumption will continue to increase with a high rate to 2050, which will be a big challenge for countries to meet both global and regional energy demand. Pumped storage stations (PSS) integrated to a hybrid power system (HPS) with solar and wind power for China are under construction to tussle with this challenge. Historically, modeling of a PSS integrated HPS has been ignored the interaction effect between the shaft vibration and the governing strategies, which will increase the dynamic risk of PSS disconnected immediately to HPS. Here we unify the models of the hydro-turbine governing system and hydro-turbine generator units with a novel expression of hydraulic forces. We quantize all the parameter’s interaction contributions of PSS integration to HPS and validate this model with the existing models. Finally, we show the feasibility of PSS’s model in integrating of a HPS under steady and fault scenarios.

    AbstractThe European Union aspires to reducing the import dependency of raw materials that are critical to its industries. In this respect, mineral resource information and data sharing by European Geological Surveys is crucial. In 2010, the European Commission identified 14 critical non-energy non-agricultural raw materials. This list was updated in 2014. This article presents the Critical Raw Material (CRM) Map of Europe produced by EuroGeoSurvey's Mineral Resources Expert Group. This map shows European mineral deposits from the EU FP7 ProMine project database, as containing critical commodities, according to the list of CRM published by the European Commission.

    AbstractA metal-organic framework, UiO-66, has been evaluated as adsorbent in a post-combustion vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) process. Equilibrium isotherms of the most relevant gases (CO2 and N2) as well as breakthrough curves measured using synthetic flue gas containing 15 mol% CO2 without and with 9 mol% water vapor are reported. Based on the breakthrough data, a six step one-column VSA cycle is designed and the effects of adsorption and CO2 rinse times used on the CO2 recovery and CO2 purity are examined. With the chosen process configuration and cycle design CO2 purities around 60% and CO2 recoveries up to 70% are achieved. 50 cycle adsorption-desorption experiments show that the cyclic CO2 capacity is reduced by approximately 25% in the presence of water vapor. No reduction in cyclic capacity is observed with increased cycle number; there is rather a slight increase in cyclic capacity with cycle number indicating that a cyclic steady state still not has been reached after 50 cycles.

    Abstract European and Italian standards establish high levels of energy performance of buildings that have to be designed considering their energy balance near zero. To achieve this goal, the reduction of energy demand, attainable by improving energy efficiency of the construction, and the use of renewable energy available both on site and off site are effective solutions to be applied. In particular, in buildings that use energy produced from renewable sources, due to their unstable and unpredictable nature, having the right strategy to compensate the variations is essential. A technical solution reevaluated as a consequence of passive design principles, is to provide an adequate thermal inertia in order to store energy when it is offered and to use it when the source is not available. In these cases, the ability of construction elements to retain heat becomes fundamental as they contribute to maintain internal comfort conditions. This paper aims to investigate how various types of heating and cooling systems, based on different modes of heat transfer, are able to interact differently with the thermal mass of the building, producing a different level of its activation. The investigation considers a case study used to carry out dynamic simulation by means of DesignBuilder which is a user interface of EnergyPlus. The model consists of a building with elementary geometry and a single thermal zone, delimited by walls with outside thermal insulation and a heat accumulation layer inside. The variation of the internal temperature by using different types of conditioning system is analyzed in order to individuate the technology that takes the greatest advantages from the thermal mass.

    Abstract The present study, deals with a novel combined ORC-VCC system. In fact, the main purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of the proposed cycle, which combines Rankine-vapor compression cycle for the cogeneration of electricity and refrigeration. This system uses a low-temperature heat sources such as solar energy, industrial waste heat and biomass.     Abstract Ventilation systems are of vital importance for buildings, not only to provide acceptable thermal conditions and air quality for occupants, but also with regards to energy usage. Impinging jets can be encountered in many ventilation strategies which have major impacts on the acoustic environment and energy performance. The self-sustaining tones can be generated in such applications where a feedback loop is installed in the system. This phenomenon is explained by the corollary of Howe who shows that the origin of noise in such configurations can be attributed to fluid rotations. Howe highlights the role of phase conditions between the vorticity, the velocity of the flow and the acoustic velocity for the optimization of energy transfers between the turbulent kinetic energy and the sound field. In this work, we use 2D-PIV technique and a microphone respectively to measure the kinematic fields simultaneously with the acoustic generation for a rectangular jet impinging on a slotted plate. This study aims to investigate the transfers between the turbulent kinetic energy and the sound field for two Reynolds numbers presenting a high and a low noise levels. It is shown that phase conditions are necessary for the optimization of energy transfer which allows the installation of the self-sustained loop in the flow. It was found also that the change of the aerodynamic mode which is directly related to the self-sustained frequency amplifies the sound intensity and promotes the transfer of energy to the acoustic field.

    AbstractTransparent and conductive Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited by spray pyrolysis and analysed in the aim to improve optical and electrical properties involved in the efficiency of Heterostructure with Intrinsic Thin Layer (HIT) solar cell. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that AZO film grown on glass has (002) preferred orientation. High optical transmittance value of ∼80% in the visible region was observed and the optical band gap was found to be 3.31eV at room temperature. The influence of AZO thin films as transparent conductive oxide TCO on heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer (HIT) solar cell performance was investigated using software simulation. The beneficial effect of implementing AZO front contact for increasing electrical energy conversion properties of HIT solar cell compared to the reference cell without the AZO layer.

    Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is considered to be one of the most promising and sustainable technologies for electricity production in the future, and as efficiency of solar thermal systems rapidly increases with increasing working temperature, the big challenge for future is to develop novel solutions for solar receivers. In this framework, Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) are mainly studied as thermal protection materials for aerospace and military applications, but their peculiar properties (very high melting points and good thermo-mechanical properties at high temperatures) can be advantageously exploited to increase the operating temperature of thermodynamic solar plants in concentrating solar power systems. This work is devoted to the study and characterization of the spectral reflectance of hafnium and zirconium diborides containing MoSi2 as secondary phase in order to evaluate their potential as novel solar absorbers. To assess the spectral selectivity properties, room-temperature hemispherical reflectance spectra were measured from the UV wavelength region to the mid-infrared, considering different levels of porosity for each system, in order to understand how porosity affect spectral reflectance. Moreover, for zirconium diboride and hafnium diboride composites containing 10vol% of MoSi2 sintering aid, the thermal emittance was measured in the 1100-1400K temperature range in PROMES-CNRS solar furnace. Data obtained were compared with spectral characteristics and high temperature emittance of a monolithic silicon carbide. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Abstract In present study, the concentrated photovoltaic thermal (PVT) has been proposed for higher thermal gain. The compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) has been also implemented with photovoltaic thermal (PVT) to increase higher input energy or solar radiation to get higher temperature. Here, water and dimethyl‐diphenyl silicone fluid (DMDP) have been considered as a fluid for proposed system. The comparative study of two fluids: water and DMDP has been presented. The maximum outlet fluid temperature of PVT (25% of collector area covered by PV module) - CPC collector have been optimized for 190 0C at mass flow rate=0.06 kg/s of this fluid. The area of receiver and aperture are 2 m2 and 4m2. The concentration ratio is 2. The area of semi-transparent (glass to glass) PV module is 0.5m2. The annual analysis has been carried out for a clear day condition for each month, New Delhi, India. Here, the net annual overall thermal energy and exergy have been found 304.46 kWh and 50.58 kWh, respectively. The electrical gain has also been found as 12.97 kWh. The proposed system has been designed for space heating or drying for many applications with self-sustainability feature.

    AbstractThe paper is devoted to the identification of the metallic impurities in silicon wafers by using Temperature Dependent Lifetime Spectroscopy (TDLS). We consider the variation of all recombination mechanisms, intrinsic and extrinsic, to follow the variation of lifetime with the temperature. The extrinsic recombination mechanism is based on the standard Shockley-Read-Hall theory (SRH) [1], [2] and we simulated the variation of SRH lifetime for two impurities: gold and iron. The simulation results show that their SRH lifetime variations with the temperature are opposite and that the presence of a peak is characteristic of the impurity studied. Experimental measurements are displayed showing the identification of gold impurity by means of Phase-Shift TDLS (PS-TDLS) measurement. Thanks to these results, we demonstrate that PS-TDLS is an efficient method to identify gold and iron impurities at concentrations as low as 1.1010cm-3 for a doping level of 1.1015cm-3.

    Abstract Global primary energy consumption will continue to increase with a high rate to 2050, which will be a big challenge for countries to meet both global and regional energy demand. Pumped storage stations (PSS) integrated to a hybrid power system (HPS) with solar and wind power for China are under construction to tussle with this challenge. Historically, modeling of a PSS integrated HPS has been ignored the interaction effect between the shaft vibration and the governing strategies, which will increase the dynamic risk of PSS disconnected immediately to HPS. Here we unify the models of the hydro-turbine governing system and hydro-turbine generator units with a novel expression of hydraulic forces. We quantize all the parameter’s interaction contributions of PSS integration to HPS and validate this model with the existing models. Finally, we show the feasibility of PSS’s model in integrating of a HPS under steady and fault scenarios.

    AbstractThe European Union aspires to reducing the import dependency of raw materials that are critical to its industries. In this respect, mineral resource information and data sharing by European Geological Surveys is crucial. In 2010, the European Commission identified 14 critical non-energy non-agricultural raw materials. This list was updated in 2014. This article presents the Critical Raw Material (CRM) Map of Europe produced by EuroGeoSurvey's Mineral Resources Expert Group. This map shows European mineral deposits from the EU FP7 ProMine project database, as containing critical commodities, according to the list of CRM published by the European Commission.

    AbstractA metal-organic framework, UiO-66, has been evaluated as adsorbent in a post-combustion vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) process. Equilibrium isotherms of the most relevant gases (CO2 and N2) as well as breakthrough curves measured using synthetic flue gas containing 15 mol% CO2 without and with 9 mol% water vapor are reported. Based on the breakthrough data, a six step one-column VSA cycle is designed and the effects of adsorption and CO2 rinse times used on the CO2 recovery and CO2 purity are examined. With the chosen process configuration and cycle design CO2 purities around 60% and CO2 recoveries up to 70% are achieved. 50 cycle adsorption-desorption experiments show that the cyclic CO2 capacity is reduced by approximately 25% in the presence of water vapor. No reduction in cyclic capacity is observed with increased cycle number; there is rather a slight increase in cyclic capacity with cycle number indicating that a cyclic steady state still not has been reached after 50 cycles.

    Abstract European and Italian standards establish high levels of energy performance of buildings that have to be designed considering their energy balance near zero. To achieve this goal, the reduction of energy demand, attainable by improving energy efficiency of the construction, and the use of renewable energy available both on site and off site are effective solutions to be applied. In particular, in buildings that use energy produced from renewable sources, due to their unstable and unpredictable nature, having the right strategy to compensate the variations is essential. A technical solution reevaluated as a consequence of passive design principles, is to provide an adequate thermal inertia in order to store energy when it is offered and to use it when the source is not available. In these cases, the ability of construction elements to retain heat becomes fundamental as they contribute to maintain internal comfort conditions. This paper aims to investigate how various types of heating and cooling systems, based on different modes of heat transfer, are able to interact differently with the thermal mass of the building, producing a different level of its activation. The investigation considers a case study used to carry out dynamic simulation by means of DesignBuilder which is a user interface of EnergyPlus. The model consists of a building with elementary geometry and a single thermal zone, delimited by walls with outside thermal insulation and a heat accumulation layer inside. The variation of the internal temperature by using different types of conditioning system is analyzed in order to individuate the technology that takes the greatest advantages from the thermal mass.

    Abstract The present study, deals with a novel combined ORC-VCC system. In fact, the main purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of the proposed cycle, which combines Rankine-vapor compression cycle for the cogeneration of electricity and refrigeration.     Abstract Ventilation systems are of vital importance for buildings, not only to provide acceptable thermal conditions and air quality for occupants, but also with regards to energy usage. Impinging jets can be encountered in many ventilation strategies which have major impacts on the acoustic environment and energy performance. The self-sustaining tones can be generated in such applications where a feedback loop is installed in the system. This phenomenon is explained by the corollary of Howe who shows that the origin of noise in such configurations can be attributed to fluid rotations. Howe highlights the role of phase conditions between the vorticity, the velocity of the flow and the acoustic velocity for the optimization of energy transfers between the turbulent kinetic energy and the sound field. In this work, we use 2D-PIV technique and a microphone respectively to measure the kinematic fields simultaneously with the acoustic generation for a rectangular jet impinging on a slotted plate. This study aims to investigate the transfers between the turbulent kinetic energy and the sound field for two Reynolds numbers presenting a high and a low noise levels. It is shown that phase conditions are necessary for the optimization of energy transfer which allows the installation of the self-sustained loop in the flow. It was found also that the change of the aerodynamic mode which is directly related to the self-sustained frequency amplifies the sound intensity and promotes the transfer of energy to the acoustic field.

    AbstractTransparent and conductive Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited by spray pyrolysis and analysed in the aim to improve optical and electrical properties involved in the efficiency of Heterostructure with Intrinsic Thin Layer (HIT) solar cell. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that AZO film grown on glass has (002) preferred orientation. High optical transmittance value of ∼80% in the visible region was observed and the optical band gap was found to be 3.31eV at room temperature. The influence of AZO thin films as transparent conductive oxide TCO on heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer (HIT) solar cell performance was investigated using software simulation. The beneficial effect of implementing AZO front contact for increasing electrical energy conversion properties of HIT solar cell compared to the reference cell without the AZO layer.

    Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is considered to be one of the most promising and sustainable technologies for electricity production in the future, and as efficiency of solar thermal systems rapidly increases with increasing working temperature, the big challenge for future is to develop novel solutions for solar receivers. In this framework, Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) are mainly studied as thermal protection materials for aerospace and military applications, but their peculiar properties (very high melting points and good thermo-mechanical properties at high temperatures) can be advantageously exploited to increase the operating temperature of thermodynamic solar plants in concentrating solar power systems. This work is devoted to the study and characterization of the spectral reflectance of hafnium and zirconium diborides containing MoSi2 as secondary phase in order to evaluate their potential as novel solar absorbers. To assess the spectral selectivity properties, room-temperature hemispherical reflectance spectra were measured from the UV wavelength region to the mid-infrared, considering different levels of porosity for each system, in order to understand how porosity affect spectral reflectance. Moreover, for zirconium diboride and hafnium diboride composites containing 10vol% of MoSi2 sintering aid, the thermal emittance was measured in the 1100-1400K temperature range in PROMES-CNRS solar furnace.     Abstract In present study, the concentrated photovoltaic thermal (PVT) has been proposed for higher thermal gain. The compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) has been also implemented with photovoltaic thermal (PVT) to increase higher input energy or solar radiation to get higher temperature. Here, water and dimethyl‐diphenyl silicone fluid (DMDP) have been considered as a fluid for proposed system. The comparative study of two fluids: water and DMDP has been presented. The maximum outlet fluid temperature of PVT (25% of collector area covered by PV module) - CPC collector have been optimized for 190 0C at mass flow rate=0.06 kg/s of this fluid. The area of receiver and aperture are 2 m2 and 4m2. The concentration ratio is 2. The area of semi-transparent (glass to glass) PV module is 0.5m2. The annual analysis has been carried out for a clear day condition for each month, New Delhi, India. Here, the net annual overall thermal energy and exergy have been found 304.46 kWh and 50.58 kWh, respectively. The electrical gain has also been found as 12.97 kWh. The proposed system has been designed for space heating or drying for many applications with self-sustainability feature.

    AbstractThe paper is devoted to the identification of the metallic impurities in silicon wafers by using Temperature Dependent Lifetime Spectroscopy (TDLS). We consider the variation of all recombination mechanisms, intrinsic and extrinsic, to follow the variation of lifetime with the temperature. The extrinsic recombination mechanism is based on the standard Shockley-Read-Hall theory (SRH) [1], [2] and we simulated the variation of SRH lifetime for two impurities: gold and iron. The simulation results show that their SRH lifetime variations with the temperature are opposite and that the presence of a peak is characteristic of the impurity studied. Experimental measurements are displayed showing the identification of gold impurity by means of Phase-Shift TDLS (PS-TDLS) measurement. Thanks to these results, we demonstrate that PS-TDLS is an efficient method to identify gold and iron impurities at concentrations as low as 1.1010cm-3 for a doping level of 1.1015cm-3.
