The present study is motivated by the need to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation given the new wave of chase for higher economic growth trajectories comes with its environmental cost implications, especially among developing blocs like the Emerging 7 (E7) countries. There is a consistent trade-off between economic growth versus environmental quality. Government apparatus are perpetually on the chase for low-carbon emission policies via the pursuit for green economy. To this end, this present study extends the conventional environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) argument by incorporating the role of institution in emerging industrialized economies (E7) and using second-generation panel analysis methods like mean group (MG), augmented mean group (AMG), common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG), and the Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test for more robust estimates and inferences. To this end, we explore the long-run and causality relationship between economic growth, quadratic form of economic growth, institutional quality, trade flow, investment in energy sector, and financial development in an EKC environment. Empirical analysis established a long-run equilibrium relationship among the outlined variables over the study period. The long-run regression shows the presence of EKC in the E7. Thus, suggesting the preference for GDP growth over environmental quality at the earlier stage of growth curve. Interestingly, investment in energy, trade flow dynamics across the blocs, and financial development dampens the detrimental effect of environmental pollution as we observed negative relationship with the ecological footprint. On the contrary, quality of institution is weak as institutional quality increase (worsen) the quality of environment in the E7 economies. From a policy perspective, this current study proposed the need for more stringent environmental treaties and regulations and promotion of green economy without compromising economic growth. In the conclusion part of the study, more details and specifics about the policy blueprint are presented.

Taiwo Temitope Lasisi in OpenAIREBeyond the anticipated experience associated with tourism destinations, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has further tasked (especially the destination countries) on the importance of tourism to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From this dimension, this study employed the ecological footprint of the 10 most visited countries (France, Spain, United States, China, Italy, Mexico, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, and Thailand) over the period 1995-2016. Specifically, the study employed an econometric approach and found that increase in tourism arrivals and globalization is detrimental to the attainment of sustainable environmental quality in a long term. Precisely, a 1% increase in international arrivals and globalization is responsible for a 0.18 and 0.89% increase in ecological footprint in the long-run. These impacts of tourism activities and globalization are detrimental to the environmental quality of the destination countries. Meanwhile, the real income per capita and biocapacity in the destination countries improve the environmental quality of the panel of destination countries in the long-run. In addition, the study found significant evidence of Granger causality from tourism and real income to ecological footprint without feedback, the globalization-ecological footprint Granger causality nexus is with feedback. Moreover, potentially effective policies for government and other stakeholders especially toward attaining Global goals were proffered in the study.

Bekun, Festus Victor in OpenAIREAnthropogenic activities in search of livelihood come with its environmental implications. This is in line with the current crusade of the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) target 7 and 13 for effective clean energy access and mitigating the adverse effect of climate change issues. Since the seminal study of Kraft and Kraft (1978) on the nexus between energy and gross national product, there has been no consensus in the extant literature in the last four decades. To this end, the current study applies recent data for the case of Nigeria from 1970 to 2017 on an annual frequency. Modified Wald causality test of Toda-Yamamoto is in conjunction with the recent gradual shift causality test with Fourier approximation for robustness and precision of analysis. Empirical results show the pollutant driven economy as one-way causality is seen running from pollutant emission to economic growth. This suggests that economic growth is driven by dirty energy sources that are from non-renewable energy sources. This is further validated in the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) confirmed in the study by the causality seen running from foreign direct investment and carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the exploration of natural resources also engenders economic expansion in Nigeria. Based on the current study findings, a couple of submissions are made such as the need for a paradigm shift to cleaner energy sources. More so, the need for the adoption of cleaner, eco-system friendlier innovations, and technologies will aid in the attainment of the SDGs of mitigating climate and pollution issues.

Accumulation of waste tyres causes an environmental disaster because of the rapid rise in transport vehicle demand resulting from modern developments, Covid-19 and similar pandemics. Thus, recycling waste tyres in the form of aggregates as a sustainable construction material can be a solution to reduce the environmental problems. Current research focuses on the impact resistance and mechanical properties of the crumb rubber self-compacting alkali-activated concrete reinforced with 1% steel fibres (SFs) where fine and coarse crumb rubbers (CR) are partially replaced with 10% and 15% replacement ratios. The compressive, flexural, splitting tensile strengths and modulus of elasticity were investigated; impact resistance was found using a drop hammer impact test. The incorporation of CR reduced the mechanical properties, and the reduction was found more with increased rubber contents, whereas the incorporation of SF compensated for the strength loss. The impact performance was enhanced with the CR and SF incorporations. The 15% CR incorporation improved the impact energy up to three times, whereas both 1% SF and 15% CR incorporations significantly enhanced the impact energy up to 30 times. Similar mechanical strengths were obtained for the different sizes of CR. However, impact performance was significantly influenced by the sizes of CR.

Festus Victor Bekun in OpenAIREEnvironmental degradation caused by various human activities has been a subject of attention over the globe. There is a concern on how to maintain a clean environment and at the same time achieve optimum production of food and non-food products amidst global energy demand. To this end, this study examines the impact of agricultural development, energy use, and economic growth on CO2 emissions in the emerging seven countries that comprises China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia, and Turkey for the annual time frequency from 1990 to 2016. The study uses a battery of econometrics techniques for soundness of analysis the consist of pooled mean group autoregressive distributed lag methodology, dynamic ordinary least squares, and fully modified ordinary least squares as estimation techniques alongside Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test for the direction of causality analysis. Empirical results revealed that value-added agriculture and economic growth are drivers of CO2 emission in the E7 countries, and the rise in renewable energy causes a reduction in CO2 emissions, while in the short run, economic growth has a positive impact on emissions in the focus countries. Causality analysis shows that there is a feedback causality between economic growth and emissions, between value-added agriculture and energy usage, between emission and value-added agriculture, and between economic growth and agricultural development. Furthermore, energy use does not cause emissions directly; it causes economic growth and value-added agriculture which causes emissions. This position aligns with the advocacy of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN-SDG) Targets 7 and 13 of clean energy access and mitigation of climate changes issues.

In recent years, a new urban transformation process has been started to minimize the seismic hazard risk in Turkey. The main aim of this process is to avoid uncontrolled urbanization and faulty structuring by replacing old buildings with new seismic-resistant structures. Unfortunately, it brings new risks. The most important risk is formed with the damages which may occur on the adjacent buildings during the demolition. There are several cases and lawsuits reached to local authorities and courts about this issue. The main cause of these damages is the violation of the rules in regulations and ignorance of engineering principles related to demolition applications. In this study, a low-strength building in Istanbul is investigated which has been damaged by the demolition of an adjacent building. The effects of these damages to the seismic performance level of the building are analyzed with three different numerical models. Primarily, both seismic performance levels of undamaged and damaged states are evaluated using nonlinear analysis method. Furthermore, a new structural member is added to the analysis model using the damaged state’s results to strengthen the damaged zone. The local structural behavior of the damaged zone and overall seismic performance of the building are investigated by three different cases aforementioned above to assess the results of this kind of damages. As a result of this study, the necessary strengthening approach is revealed by means of strengthening the local damaged zone or whole structure to provide necessary seismic performance level of the low-strength buildings having this type of damages.

Abstract The drive toward the attainment of sustainable environment globally through clean energy development or energy efficiency is not more desirable than in the 21st century, thus the existential policy moderations of economic, trade and security mechanisms. On this premise, and foremost in the literature, the current study examined the country-specific (for the United States) and the driving impacts of economic policy uncertainty, trade policy and national security on the development of cleaner energy sources by using quarterly frequency time series data for period 1990:Q1-2018:Q2. By employing economic expansion as additional factor, the study implemented the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Bounds Testing approach to reveal interesting results: (1) there is a significant evidence that economic expansion, economic policy uncertainty (EU), trade policy (TP), and national security (NS) exhibits long term properties in common, (2) the increase in economic expansion and NS effectiveness significantly yields more cleaner energy development, and (3) a more tightened TP and high EU are statistically significant and detrimental to the development of clean energy. The Granger causality evidence substantiates the role economic expansion, TP, EU and national security in renewable energy development. Generally, the study posits cleaner and energy efficiency policy directive for policymakers in the United States and other countries of interest from the framework of climate action and sustainable development.

It is an indoor positioning system (IPS) based mobile application. The main idea is providing a win win situation between the customers and stores. It will be utilized in the store or in front of the store with a check in at the store. Thus, the customer will easily reach many offers, product explanations of the considered store. Also, with visiting the stores the user will collect some reward points that will be used in their next shopping. In the project, main idea is to take advantage of shopping mall visiting of people and usage of smart phones together. The aim is to turn a profit with the mobile application. Also, the project may easily be adapted and work together with a new developing and remarkable transportation systems' solution Electric Vehicles (EVs).

Our study contributes towards identifying the world best practises and possible ways of attaining China's climate and sustainable goals. China is among the fastest growing emerging economies in the world, and its growth cannot be separated from utilization of energy sources which are capable of jeopardizing its climate and sustainable goals. China is ranked 1st in the global carbon emission which has great implications in both its domestic environment sustainable development and global climate change. Considering the position of China in the global economic and environmental performance, it is essential to investigate the possible global best practices to achieve its sustainable development. We utilized China's data of 1996Q1-2018Q4 for this study. Relevant instruments (renewable energy, technology innovation and institution) and methodology (Autoregressive Distributed Lag-ARDL bound and dynamics with granger causality) are adopted to scientifically test both the economic and environment performance of China. Findings from ARDL test established non validity of inverted U-shaped theory of Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for the case of China. Also, inverse relationship is established between all the selected variables (renewable energy, technological innovation and institution) and the CO2. Interestingly, the output from granger causality is in synergy with the output from ARDL short and long run outputs. Feedback transmission was found between the variables (renewable energy, technological innovation and institution) of our choice with both environment (carbon dioxide emissions-CO2) and economic growth (Gross Domestic Product-GDP). The trend of relationship established between the selected variables (renewable energy, technology innovation and institution) points towards China's ability to achieve its climate and sustainable goal by framing its policy around energy sector and enhancement of technology with strong institutions.
