The objective of this study was to propose a set of procedures to assess areas regarding the suitability of sustainable drainage systems (SuDSs) with application in a basin in the urban area of São Carlos (Brazil). The assessment was based on an analysis of 39 attributes reflecting the infiltration conditions that control the functional and constructive aspects of the systems, including subsurface drainability, stability, and groundwater contamination potential, which control the degree of suitability of each plot of land. The data obtained through engineering geological mapping procedures and physical principles were used to characterize the area, which resulted in the division of the basin into five SuDS suitability zones, ranging from favorable to restrictive. The proposed procedures proved to be efficient for analyzing the suitability of different SuDS types and the zoning of an area into terrain units. This approach can help planners identify the most appropriate SuDS types for a given unit, optimize the efficiency/cost relationship, and foresee potential environmental and construction-related challenges. In other words, this procedure enables the assessment of the suitability of SuDSs for different unit terrain types with inexpensive and environmentally efficient technological procedures and resources and can be applied at a fine geographic scale.

The removal or degradation of contaminants is a combination of physicochemical and biological processes. For more than 100 years, RBF has been used in Europe for public and industrial water supply along Rhine, Elbe, and Danube rivers. This paper presents an investigation of a full-scale RBF plant located in Upper Egypt as section of Nile valley to produce drinking water. The studied plant is constructed in 2004 to supply potable water for Sidfa city (30,000 residents), Assiut Governorate. It consists of 6 vertical wells, each about 60 m deep, with distance about 30 m from the west bank of Nile. Water samples from Nile as induced surface water, from background groundwater, and from production wellfield were collected and analyzed at three discrete events. Quality measurements of physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics were obtained. Comparison of produced water with surface and background natural groundwater for the investigated plant has proven the effectiveness of RBF technique for potable water supply in Upper Egypt. Physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of the produced water are better than the allowable standards for drinking purposes. The results prove the implementation of RBF treatment method for water supply in Nile valley.

Abstract Hydrogen is recently being promoted immensely as the primary energy carrier to replace fossil fuels for the envisioned environmentally friendly and sustainable future energy system, given its peculiar properties and advantages over conventional fuels and other alternative energy sources. Hydrogen is classified into various color categories based on the type of feedstock, technology, and CO2 emissions in its production pathway. This paper focuses on blue hydrogen, discussing its potential as the most promising hydrogen production pathway for the near-to-mid-term transition into a hydrogen economy. First, a comprehensive overview of the hydrogen economy is given with a detailed description of hydrogen's color-code categorization. Blue hydrogen production methods are explained, and blue and green hydrogen are compared on the subject of the grand energy transition. Furthermore, the arguments favoring blue hydrogen as the most promising alternative for the near-to-mid-term energy transition are explained. Finally, a comparative life cycle analysis (LCA) of environmental emissions and resource usage in blue hydrogen and other selected commonly used fuel production pathways is conducted using the greenhouse gases, regulated emissions, and energy use in technologies (GREET) model to analyze the potentials of the blue hydrogen production pathway. The LCA results showed that more efforts need to be committed to reducing nitrous and sulfur oxides in the blue hydrogen production pathway and improving energy and CO2 capturing efficiencies in carbon capture and storage (CCS) plants.

This process may be considered as one of management tool in service chain of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM). For this purpose technological features of methods, the advantages, disadvantages and possibilities of the use have been analysed. The article provides a review of the most efficiently methods of faecal sludge dewatering generated in the individual residential sector (unplanted drying beds, planted drying beds, solar drying, mechanical dewatering, geotubes) and their analysis in order to select the best available technology in accordance with the selection criteria. We used the analytic hierarchy process to determine the most multi-operated and effective processing method of faecal sludge dewatering. The final ranking for each dewatering technology was based on the global weights of 10 criteria (dewatering efficiency, operation time, process automation, required space, climate dependent, capital expenditures, operating costs, energy efficiency and environmental impact). The results identify dewatering method with the highest priority result based on priority eigenvalues of criteria.

This paper presents water the footprint assessment (WFA) of carbon in pulp (CIP) gold processing. The main objectives of the study are determining grey and blue water footprints and identifying the hotspots of the process. Results revealed that the total blue water footprint, including the extraction and processing of the gold, was found to be 452.40 m3/kg Au, and the grey WF to be 2300.69 m3/kg Au. According to the results, the lost return flow on the direct blue WF side has the largest contribution, with a value of 260.61 m3/kg Au, and the only source of the lost return flow is the tailing pond. On the indirect side, it is seen that the oxygen consumption used for the leaching process has the highest value, with 37.38 m3/kg. Among the nine contaminants in the mine tailings, the critical component responsible for the grey water footprint is by far arsenic, with a value of 1777 m3/kg Au. The results will be used to make recommendations for reducing water consumption in mining operations, for a better design for the environment. The study is a pioneering study, being the first implementation of water footprint assessment in a gold mine in Turkey.

Biofuel has emerged as a substantial source of energy in many countries. In order to avoid the 'food versus fuel competition', arising from grain-based ethanol production, the United States has passed regulations that require second generation or cellulosic biofeedstocks to be used for majority of the biofuel production by 2022. Agricultural residue, such as corn stover, is currently the largest source of cellulosic feedstock. However, increased harvesting of crops residue may lead to increased application of fertilizers in order to recover the soil nutrients lost from the residue removal. Alternatively, introduction of less-fertilizer intensive perennial grasses such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and Miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus Greef et Deu.) can be a viable source for biofuel production. Even though these grasses are shown to reduce nutrient loads to a great extent, high production cost have constrained their wide adoptability to be used as a viable feedstock. Nonetheless, there is an opportunity to optimize feedstock production to meet bioenergy demand while improving water quality. This study presents a multi-objective simulation optimization framework using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Multi Algorithm Genetically Adaptive Method (AMALGAM) to develop optimal cropping pattern with minimum nutrient delivery and minimum biomass production cost. Computational time required for optimization was significantly reduced by loose coupling SWAT with an external in-stream solute transport model. Optimization was constrained by food security and biofuel production targets that ensured not more than 10% reduction in grain yield and at least 100 million gallons of ethanol production. A case study was carried out in St. Joseph River Watershed that covers 280,000 ha area in the Midwest U.S. Results of the study indicated that introduction of corn stover removal and perennial grass production reduce nitrate and total phosphorus loads without compromising on food and biofuel production. Optimization runs yielded an optimal cropping pattern with 32% of watershed area in stover removal, 15% in switchgrass and 2% in Miscanthus. The optimal scenario resulted in 14% reduction in nitrate and 22% reduction in total phosphorus from the baseline. This framework can be used as an effective tool to take decisions regarding environmentally and economically sustainable strategies to minimize the nutrient delivery at minimal biomass production cost, while simultaneously meeting food and biofuel production targets.

This research will look at the harvesting of captured stormwater for the irrigation of urban playing fields and what the implications are for catchment hydrology, local community, and local council. This research aims to identify, understand and determine the catchment conditions that may hinder the stormwater quality and quantity for capture and reuse, as well as determining whether the stormwater harvesting will be sustainable. Research methods for this project will include systemic analysis in order to further investigate the assumptions being made in the study. Manly Golf Club has relied on groundwater extraction supplemented by potable supplies for irrigation, however potable supplies are no longer available. It has been proposed to provide irrigation supplies from stormwater via onsite storage and groundwater recharge. Monitored stormwater entering the Golf Course from the adjacent Cemetery Creek sub-catchment for pollutants, have indicated that it may be suitable for irrigation with treatment and may reduce problems generated by overuse of groundwater. The proposal will provide environmental benefit through reduced pollution loads being discharged directly to receiving waters and cessation of use of potable supplies by the Club. Social and economic benefits are expected to be gained and will be monitored as part of an ongoing research program.

Mussati;A nitrogen removal benchmark was analyzed using the Activated Sludge Models No. 1 (ASM1) and No. 3 (ASM3) in order to establish a basis for designing an experimental comparison of the two model types. Differences in steady state effluent concentrations predicted by both models could to a large extent be explained by different model concepts. The steady state system performance was analyzed by evaluating the Monod factor values, and through a sensitivity analysis of the kinetic model parameters. Both methods complement each other. Analysis of the Monod factor values can lead to determination of parameters to be estimated during model calibration. The steady state system response to manipulation of the potential actuators for control was evaluated via a sensitivity analysis. The concept of relative sensitivity was introduced to compare the relative effect of each actuator in both models. The negative relative sensitivities of X S to four of the five control handles analyzed imply an opposite response of both models, which can be important for control structure design. The analysis of the process behavior to different disturbances showed different dynamics of both models. ASM3 simulation results are easier to interpret because the model structure is more transparent, mainly due to the simpler cell decay model principle considered in ASM3. An inverse response was obtained for the return sludge and nitrate recycle flow rate, indicating that multivariable control design is required.

It is an example of success in achieving food policy objectives, but it has also introduced the challenge of groundwater sustainability. This paper examines the trends in groundwater abstraction for irrigation and the effect of government policies, including input subsidies – such as the diesel fuel subsidy and the crop procurement price support. The fuel subsidy is an important driving force in groundwater depletion and over-abstraction. This analysis examines the interaction between policy signals and the use and allocation of water by farmers. The rapid decline in groundwater resources shows the limitations of this agricultural development strategy and questions its sustainability unless policies change and the rate of abstraction is changed so as not exceed the recharge rate.

In the past few years, anaerobic ammonium oxidation-based processes have attracted a lot of attention for their implementation at the mainstream line of wastewater treatment plants, due to the possibility of leading to energy autarky if combined with anaerobic digestion. However, little is known about the potential degradation of micropollutants by the microbial groups responsible of these processes and the few results available are inconclusive. This study aimed to assess the degradation capability of biomass withdrawn from a combined nitritation/anaerobic ammonium oxidation (combined N/A) pilot plant towards five pharmaceutically active compounds (ibuprofen, sulfamethoxazole, metoprolol, venlafaxine and carbamazepine). Batch experiments were performed under different conditions by selectively activating or inhibiting different microbial groups: i) regular combined N/A operation, ii) aerobic (optimal for nitrifying bacteria), iii) aerobic with allylthiourea (an inhibitor of ammonia monooxygenase, enzyme of ammonia oxidizing bacteria), iv) anoxic (optimal for anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria), v) aerobic with acetate (optimal for heterotrophic bacteria) and vi) anoxic with acetate (optimal for heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria). Ibuprofen was the most biodegradable compound being significantly degraded (49-100%) under any condition except heterotrophic denitrification. Sulfamethoxazole, exhibited the highest removal (70%) under optimal conditions for nitrifying bacteria but in the rest of the experiments anoxic conditions were found to be slightly more favorable (up to 58%). For metoprolol the highest performance was obtained under anoxic conditions favoring anammox bacteria (62%). Finally, carbamazepine and venlafaxine were hardly removed (≤10% in the majority of cases). Taken together, these results suggest the specificity of different microbial groups that in combination with alternating operational parameters can lead to enhanced removal of some micropollutants.

The objective of this study was to propose a set of procedures to assess areas regarding the suitability of sustainable drainage systems (SuDSs) with application in a basin in the urban area of São Carlos (Brazil). The assessment was based on an analysis of 39 attributes reflecting the infiltration conditions that control the functional and constructive aspects of the systems, including subsurface drainability, stability, and groundwater contamination potential, which control the degree of suitability of each plot of land. The data obtained through engineering geological mapping procedures and physical principles were used to characterize the area, which resulted in the division of the basin into five SuDS suitability zones, ranging from favorable to restrictive. The proposed procedures proved to be efficient for analyzing the suitability of different SuDS types and the zoning of an area into terrain units. This approach can help planners identify the most appropriate SuDS types for a given unit, optimize the efficiency/cost relationship, and foresee potential environmental and construction-related challenges. In other words, this procedure enables the assessment of the suitability of SuDSs for different unit terrain types with inexpensive and environmentally efficient technological procedures and resources and can be applied at a fine geographic scale.

The removal or degradation of contaminants is a combination of physicochemical and biological processes. For more than 100 years, RBF has been used in Europe for public and industrial water supply along Rhine, Elbe, and Danube rivers. This paper presents an investigation of a full-scale RBF plant located in Upper Egypt as section of Nile valley to produce drinking water. The studied plant is constructed in 2004 to supply potable water for Sidfa city (30,000 residents), Assiut Governorate. It consists of 6 vertical wells, each about 60 m deep, with distance about 30 m from the west bank of Nile. Water samples from Nile as induced surface water, from background groundwater, and from production wellfield were collected and analyzed at three discrete events. Quality measurements of physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics were obtained. Comparison of produced water with surface and background natural groundwater for the investigated plant has proven the effectiveness of RBF technique for potable water supply in Upper Egypt. Physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of the produced water are better than the allowable standards for drinking purposes. The results prove the implementation of RBF treatment method for water supply in Nile valley.

Abstract Hydrogen is recently being promoted immensely as the primary energy carrier to replace fossil fuels for the envisioned environmentally friendly and sustainable future energy system, given its peculiar properties and advantages over conventional fuels and other alternative energy sources. Hydrogen is classified into various color categories based on the type of feedstock, technology, and CO2 emissions in its production pathway. This paper focuses on blue hydrogen, discussing its potential as the most promising hydrogen production pathway for the near-to-mid-term transition into a hydrogen economy. First, a comprehensive overview of the hydrogen economy is given with a detailed description of hydrogen's color-code categorization. Blue hydrogen production methods are explained, and blue and green hydrogen are compared on the subject of the grand energy transition. Furthermore, the arguments favoring blue hydrogen as the most promising alternative for the near-to-mid-term energy transition are explained. Finally, a comparative life cycle analysis (LCA) of environmental emissions and resource usage in blue hydrogen and other selected commonly used fuel production pathways is conducted using the greenhouse gases, regulated emissions, and energy use in technologies (GREET) model to analyze the potentials of the blue hydrogen production pathway. The LCA results showed that more efforts need to be committed to reducing nitrous and sulfur oxides in the blue hydrogen production pathway and improving energy and CO2 capturing efficiencies in carbon capture and storage (CCS) plants.

This process may be considered as one of management tool in service chain of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM). For this purpose technological features of methods, the advantages, disadvantages and possibilities of the use have been analysed. The article provides a review of the most efficiently methods of faecal sludge dewatering generated in the individual residential sector (unplanted drying beds, planted drying beds, solar drying, mechanical dewatering, geotubes) and their analysis in order to select the best available technology in accordance with the selection criteria. We used the analytic hierarchy process to determine the most multi-operated and effective processing method of faecal sludge dewatering. The final ranking for each dewatering technology was based on the global weights of 10 criteria (dewatering efficiency, operation time, process automation, required space, climate dependent, capital expenditures, operating costs, energy efficiency and environmental impact). The results identify dewatering method with the highest priority result based on priority eigenvalues of criteria.

This paper presents water the footprint assessment (WFA) of carbon in pulp (CIP) gold processing. The main objectives of the study are determining grey and blue water footprints and identifying the hotspots of the process. Results revealed that the total blue water footprint, including the extraction and processing of the gold, was found to be 452.40 m3/kg Au, and the grey WF to be 2300.69 m3/kg Au. According to the results, the lost return flow on the direct blue WF side has the largest contribution, with a value of 260.61 m3/kg Au, and the only source of the lost return flow is the tailing pond. On the indirect side, it is seen that the oxygen consumption used for the leaching process has the highest value, with 37.38 m3/kg. Among the nine contaminants in the mine tailings, the critical component responsible for the grey water footprint is by far arsenic, with a value of 1777 m3/kg Au. The results will be used to make recommendations for reducing water consumption in mining operations, for a better design for the environment. The study is a pioneering study, being the first implementation of water footprint assessment in a gold mine in Turkey.

Biofuel has emerged as a substantial source of energy in many countries. In order to avoid the 'food versus fuel competition', arising from grain-based ethanol production, the United States has passed regulations that require second generation or cellulosic biofeedstocks to be used for majority of the biofuel production by 2022. Agricultural residue, such as corn stover, is currently the largest source of cellulosic feedstock. However, increased harvesting of crops residue may lead to increased application of fertilizers in order to recover the soil nutrients lost from the residue removal. Alternatively, introduction of less-fertilizer intensive perennial grasses such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and Miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus Greef et Deu.) can be a viable source for biofuel production. Even though these grasses are shown to reduce nutrient loads to a great extent, high production cost have constrained their wide adoptability to be used as a viable feedstock. Nonetheless, there is an opportunity to optimize feedstock production to meet bioenergy demand while improving water quality. This study presents a multi-objective simulation optimization framework using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Multi Algorithm Genetically Adaptive Method (AMALGAM) to develop optimal cropping pattern with minimum nutrient delivery and minimum biomass production cost. Computational time required for optimization was significantly reduced by loose coupling SWAT with an external in-stream solute transport model. Optimization was constrained by food security and biofuel production targets that ensured not more than 10% reduction in grain yield and at least 100 million gallons of ethanol production. A case study was carried out in St. Joseph River Watershed that covers 280,000 ha area in the Midwest U.S. Results of the study indicated that introduction of corn stover removal and perennial grass production reduce nitrate and total phosphorus loads without compromising on food and biofuel production. Optimization runs yielded an optimal cropping pattern with 32% of watershed area in stover removal, 15% in switchgrass and 2% in Miscanthus. The optimal scenario resulted in 14% reduction in nitrate and 22% reduction in total phosphorus from the baseline. This framework can be used as an effective tool to take decisions regarding environmentally and economically sustainable strategies to minimize the nutrient delivery at minimal biomass production cost, while simultaneously meeting food and biofuel production targets.

This research will look at the harvesting of captured stormwater for the irrigation of urban playing fields and what the implications are for catchment hydrology, local community, and local council. This research aims to identify, understand and determine the catchment conditions that may hinder the stormwater quality and quantity for capture and reuse, as well as determining whether the stormwater harvesting will be sustainable. Research methods for this project will include systemic analysis in order to further investigate the assumptions being made in the study. Manly Golf Club has relied on groundwater extraction supplemented by potable supplies for irrigation, however potable supplies are no longer available. It has been proposed to provide irrigation supplies from stormwater via onsite storage and groundwater recharge. Monitored stormwater entering the Golf Course from the adjacent Cemetery Creek sub-catchment for pollutants, have indicated that it may be suitable for irrigation with treatment and may reduce problems generated by overuse of groundwater. The proposal will provide environmental benefit through reduced pollution loads being discharged directly to receiving waters and cessation of use of potable supplies by the Club. Social and economic benefits are expected to be gained and will be monitored as part of an ongoing research program.

Mussati;A nitrogen removal benchmark was analyzed using the Activated Sludge Models No. 1 (ASM1) and No. 3 (ASM3) in order to establish a basis for designing an experimental comparison of the two model types. Differences in steady state effluent concentrations predicted by both models could to a large extent be explained by different model concepts. The steady state system performance was analyzed by evaluating the Monod factor values, and through a sensitivity analysis of the kinetic model parameters. Both methods complement each other. Analysis of the Monod factor values can lead to determination of parameters to be estimated during model calibration. The steady state system response to manipulation of the potential actuators for control was evaluated via a sensitivity analysis. The concept of relative sensitivity was introduced to compare the relative effect of each actuator in both models. The negative relative sensitivities of X S to four of the five control handles analyzed imply an opposite response of both models, which can be important for control structure design. The analysis of the process behavior to different disturbances showed different dynamics of both models. ASM3 simulation results are easier to interpret because the model structure is more transparent, mainly due to the simpler cell decay model principle considered in ASM3. An inverse response was obtained for the return sludge and nitrate recycle flow rate, indicating that multivariable control design is required.

It is an example of success in achieving food policy objectives, but it has also introduced the challenge of groundwater sustainability. This paper examines the trends in groundwater abstraction for irrigation and the effect of government policies, including input subsidies – such as the diesel fuel subsidy and the crop procurement price support. The fuel subsidy is an important driving force in groundwater depletion and over-abstraction. This analysis examines the interaction between policy signals and the use and allocation of water by farmers. The rapid decline in groundwater resources shows the limitations of this agricultural development strategy and questions its sustainability unless policies change and the rate of abstraction is changed so as not exceed the recharge rate.

In the past few years, anaerobic ammonium oxidation-based processes have attracted a lot of attention for their implementation at the mainstream line of wastewater treatment plants, due to the possibility of leading to energy autarky if combined with anaerobic digestion. However, little is known about the potential degradation of micropollutants by the microbial groups responsible of these processes and the few results available are inconclusive. This study aimed to assess the degradation capability of biomass withdrawn from a combined nitritation/anaerobic ammonium oxidation (combined N/A) pilot plant towards five pharmaceutically active compounds (ibuprofen, sulfamethoxazole, metoprolol, venlafaxine and carbamazepine). Batch experiments were performed under different conditions by selectively activating or inhibiting different microbial groups: i) regular combined N/A operation, ii) aerobic (optimal for nitrifying bacteria), iii) aerobic with allylthiourea (an inhibitor of ammonia monooxygenase, enzyme of ammonia oxidizing bacteria), iv) anoxic (optimal for anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria), v) aerobic with acetate (optimal for heterotrophic bacteria) and vi) anoxic with acetate (optimal for heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria). Ibuprofen was the most biodegradable compound being significantly degraded (49-100%) under any condition except heterotrophic denitrification. Sulfamethoxazole, exhibited the highest removal (70%) under optimal conditions for nitrifying bacteria but in the rest of the experiments anoxic conditions were found to be slightly more favorable (up to 58%). For metoprolol the highest performance was obtained under anoxic conditions favoring anammox bacteria (62%). Finally, carbamazepine and venlafaxine were hardly removed (≤10% in the majority of cases). Taken together, these results suggest the specificity of different microbial groups that in combination with alternating operational parameters can lead to enhanced removal of some micropollutants.
