    During the coking process, due to the small width of the carbonization chamber of modern ovens, horizontal expansion of coal generates a pressure on the oven walls. The objective of this thesis, which is part of European project « Swelling Pressure in a Coke Oven, Transmission on Oven walls », is to better understand the wall pressure phenomenon during coking process and to develop a model which can permit to anticipate this phenomenon. For this, a phenomenological model which takes into account the physical chemistry phenomena in presence is developed. An original implementation is proposed for the kinetic of tars condensation and the coal swelling during pyrolysis. The proposed model is the first which reproducing simultaneously the wall pressure and the gas pressure during coking process. The simulation results of coking process of the specific case of Blue Creek coal in the pilot oven of Centre de Pyrolyse de Marienau and the measurements of gas pressure, of temperature and of wall pressure performed during the tests have discrepancies but remain in good agreement. The discrepancies are mainly due to the ignorance of coal properties and its mechanical behavior. The assumption of linear elastic behavior leads to wall pressure overestimation. The sensitivity study permits to conclude that the wall pressure is not directly dependant to the gas pressure and that coal swelling play a causal role. Lors du procédé de cokéfaction, en raison de la faible largeur de la chambre de carbonisation des fours modernes, l’expansion horizontale de la pâte à coke génère une poussée sur les parois de chauffage. L’objectif de cette thèse, qui s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet européen « Swelling Pressure in a Coke Oven, Transmission on Oven walls », est de mieux comprendre le phénomène de poussée des charbons lors de la cokéfaction et de développer un modèle permettant d’anticiper ce phénomène. Pour cela, un modèle phénoménologique prenant en compte les phénomènes physico-chimiques en présence a été développé. Une mise en équation originale est proposée pour la cinétique de condensation des goudrons et le gonflement des grains de charbon lors de la pyrolyse. Le modèle proposé est le premier reproduisant simultanément la poussée sur les piédroits et la pression des gaz produits lors de la cokéfaction. Les résultats de simulation du cas particulier de la cokéfaction du charbon Blue Creek dans le four pilote du Centre de Pyrolyse de Marienau et les mesures de pression, de température et de poussée réalisées lors des essais présentent des écarts mais demeurent en bon accord. Ces écarts sont essentiellement dus à la méconnaissance des propriétés du charbon et de son comportement mécanique. L’hypothèse d’un comportement élastique linéaire entraîne une surestimation de la poussée. L’étude de sensibilité amène, entre autres, à la conclusion que la poussée ne dépend pas directement de la pression des gaz et que le gonflement des grains de charbon joue un rôle déterminant.

    International audience This work exposes the spatio-temporal frequency of seasonal drought in Gharb, a leading agricultural region in the Northwest of Morocco. It is based on the monthly approach of the report precipitation/temperature. The report P < 2T shows that the summer drought is regularly present each year and its length varies from one year to the next. Drought can also accidentally set other seasons of the year.In Gharb, the dry months recorded a trend to decline or stagnation following the stations. This translates into a tendency rather to both rising temperatures than precipitation. However, the definition of drought based on temperature and precipitation parameters does not have the slightestmathematical justification, since it establishes the link between quantities of different nature. On the other hand, water balances, calculated from the confrontation of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, emphasize drought in terms of water deficit. Potential evapotranspiration is rarely measured with reliability in Gharb, particularly in the studied sites. Ce travail expose la fréquence spatiotemporelle des sécheresses saisonnières dans le Gharb, une région agricole de premier plan située dans le nord-ouest du Maroc. Il est basé sur l’approche mensuelle du rapport précipitations/températures. Le rapport P<2T montre que la sécheresse estivale est régulièrement présente chaque année et sa longueur varie d’une année à l’autre. La sécheresse peut également affecter accidentellement d’autres saisons de l’année.Dans le Gharb, les mois secs enregistrent une tendance à la baisse ou à la stagnation suivant les stations. Cela se traduit par une tendance plutôt à la hausse aussi bien des températures que des précipitations. Toutefois, la définition de la sécheresse reposant sur les paramètres des précipitationset des températures ne possède pas la moindre justification mathématique, puisqu’elle établit le lien entre des grandeurs de nature différente. Par contre, les bilans hydriques, calculés à partir de la confrontation des précipitations et de l’évapotranspiration potentielle, font ressortir la sécheresse entermes de déficit hydrique. L’évapotranspiration potentielle est rarement mesurée avec fiabilité dans le Gharb, notamment au niveau des stations étudiées.

    This paper details a numerical study of solid-liquid phase change heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure with the aim of optimizing the number, dimension, and positioning of fins in the enclosure. The enclosure is exposed on one side to a constant heat flux of 1000 W/m2 for 3 h and both the total fin mass and the PCM mass are kept constant in all simulated cases. The heat diffusion equation in the PCM uses the equivalent heat capacity method while natural convection driven PCM motion in the enclosure is modeled through the buoyancy force, using a modified viscosity and an additional volume force term in the Navier-Stokes momentum conservation equation. Three efficiency assessment parameters are used: (i) the height-averaged temperature of the front hot plate which should remain as low as possible for the longer possible time, (ii) the energy stored inside the PCM as a function of time, and (iii) the heat transfer rate and heat flux between the front plate and the PCM. For each simulated case, complementary data such as the standard deviation of temperature along the heated plate and the ratio of sensible heat to latent accumulation are also calculated. Results show that increasing the number of fins diminishes both the stabilization temperature and the stabilization time of the front plate during phase change, and accelerates the sensible and latent storage of energy in the PCM. Using thinner but longer fins provides the same impact except that the stabilization time also increases as the fin length is increased. Besides, at constant fin mass, varying fin spacing have marginal impact on the latent heat storage performance and on the hot plate temperature stabilization. The study also shows that the surface area plays the largest role in the increase of the heat transfer rate between the front plate and the PCM, while configurations which can promote stronger natural convection lead to higher heat flux. Finally, it was observed that systems allowing easier heat transfer to the back plate during melting provide a higher ratio of sensible heat to latent accumulation, while the standard deviation of the front plate temperature decreases as the number of fins or the spacing between fins increases.

    Predicting likely species responses to an alteration of their local environment is key to decision‐making in resource management, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation practice in the face of global human‐induced habitat disturbance. This is especially true for forest trees which are a dominant life form on Earth and play a central role in supporting diverse communities and structuring a wide range of ecosystems. In Europe, it is expected that most forest tree species will not be able to migrate North fast enough to follow the estimated temperature isocline shift given current predictions for rapid climate warming. In this context, a topical question for forest genetics research is to quantify the ability for tree species to adapt locally to strongly altered environmental conditions (Kremer et al. ). Identifying environmental factors driving local adaptation is, however, a major challenge for evolutionary biology and ecology in general but is particularly difficult in trees given their large individual and population size and long generation time. Empirical evaluation of local adaptation in trees has traditionally relied on fastidious long‐term common garden experiments (provenance trials) now supplemented by reference genome sequence analysis for a handful of economically valuable species. However, such resources have been lacking for most tree species despite their ecological importance in supporting whole ecosystems. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, De Kort et al. () provide original and convincing empirical evidence of local adaptation to temperature in black alder, Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn, a surprisingly understudied keystone species supporting riparian ecosystems. Here, De Kort et al. () use an innovative empirical approach complementing state‐of‐the‐art landscape genomics analysis of A. glutinosa populations sampled in natura across a regional climate gradient with phenotypic trait assessment in a common garden experiment (Fig. ). By combining the two methods, De Kort et al. () were able to detect unequivocal association between temperature and phenotypic traits such as leaf size as well as with genetic loci putatively under divergent selection for temperature. The research by De Kort et al. () provides valuable insight into adaptive response to temperature variation for an ecologically important species and demonstrates the usefulness of an integrated approach for empirical evaluation of local adaptation in nonmodel species (Sork et al. ).

    In Western countries, the consumption of animal protein, which is the predominant protein source, has been decreasing over the last decade. This consumption has been negatively associated with different sustainability parameters in the majority of cases, and studies modelling sustainable diets have shown that the different parameters are not always compatible. Diets that significantly improve different sustainability parameters have been modelled, but the consideration of cultural acceptability is insufficient and requires further investigation. The objective of this thesis was to model acceptable trajectories of rearrangement of protein source consumption to increase nutritional adequacy and to evaluate its impacts on sustainability. The study of protein source consumption in France led to the conclusion that protein intake is adequate for the entire population, but that there are different profiles of protein intake characterized by different levels of nutritional security. A study conducted in 2018 found that meat consumption levels were predicted by attitudes, social norms, and perceived behavioral control related to the reduction of meat consumption. For the stepwise dietary modelling study, it was considered acceptable for an individual to consume a new food if it was widely consumed by individuals with a similar profile of protein intake. This hypothesis was validated by a survey conducted in 2018. The modelling work identified that some dietary recommendations were effective for the general population, but others were specific to certain profiles of protein intake characterized by specific nutritional profiles and food repertoires. Finally, models have identified that systematically targeting more plant proteins during the first dietary modifications allows, despite a slightly lower nutritional adequacy, to obtain better sustainability parameters.; Dans les pays occidentaux, la consommation de protéines animales, majoritaire, diminue depuis une décennie. Elle est, dans la majorité des cas, associée négativement à différents paramètres de durabilité, et les études modélisant des régimes durables ont montré que les différents paramètres n’étaient pas toujours compatibles. Des régimes améliorant largement différents paramètres de durabilité ont été modélisés, mais la prise en compte de l’acceptabilité culturelle est insuffisante et nécessite des approfondissements. L’objectif de cette thèse était de modéliser des trajectoires acceptables de réarrangement de la consommation de sources protéiques pour augmenter l’adéquation nutritionnelle et d’en évaluer les impacts sur la durabilité. L’étude des consommations de sources de protéines en France a permis de conclure que les apports en protéines sont adéquats pour l’ensemble de la population, mais qu’il existe différents profils de consommation protéique, caractérisés par des niveaux de sécurité nutritionnelle différents. Une étude réalisée en 2018 a permis d’établir que les niveaux de consommation de viande étaient prédits par les attitudes, les normes sociales, et l’auto-efficacité perçue vis-à-vis de la réduction de la consommation de viande. Pour les travaux de modélisation pas-à-pas de l’alimentation, il a été considéré acceptable pour un individu de consommer un nouvel aliment, si celui-ci était largement consommé par des individus au profil de consommation protéique similaire. Cette hypothèse a été validée par une enquête en 2018. Les travaux de modélisation ont permis d’identifier que certaines recommandations alimentaires étaient efficaces pour l’ensemble de la population, mais que d’autres étaient spécifiques à certains profils de consommation protéique, caractérisés par des profils nutritionnels et des répertoires alimentaires spécifiques. Enfin, des modèles ont permis d’identifier que viser systématiquement plus de protéines végétales lors des premières modifications diététiques permet, malgré une adéquation nutritionnelle légèrement plus faible, d’obtenir de meilleurs paramètres de durabilité.

    The weekly release of the U.S. inventory level by the DOE-EIA is known as the market mover in the U.S. oil futures market. We uncover suspicious trading patterns in the WTI futures markets in days when the inventory level is released that are higher than market forecasts: there are significantly more orders initiated by buyers in the two hours preceding the official release of the inventory level, with a drop in the average price of -0.25% ahead of the news release. This finding is consistent with informed trading. We also provide evidence of an asymmetric response of the oil price to oil-inventory news, and highlight an over-reaction that is partly compensated in the hours following the announcement.

    Abstract This study demonstrates the coupling of Ionic liquids (ILs) with a membrane contactor for post-combustion CO2 capture at moderate pressures and temperatures. ILs 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate([emim][MeSO4]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide([emim][DCA]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate([emim][EtSO4]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim][Ac]) were selected due to their high thermal stability, moderate viscosity and surface tension, as well as high CO2 solubility. No wetting conditions were confirmed for the polypropylene membrane by measuring contact angle, liquid entry pressure (LEP) and SEM of fiber surface before and after the operation. ILs were recirculated in the setup until reaching pseudo-steady-state. All four ILs were able to capture a substantial amount of CO2 during the specified operation time. Initially, very high values of CO2 mass transfer flux and experimental overall mass transfer coefficient were obtained which further decreased with operation time and reached a nearly constant value at pseudo-steady-state. Effect of CO2 loading of the ILs and temperature on enhancement factor and first order rate constant were evaluated. The absorption behavior and kinetics were strongly influenced by the CO2 concentration in the ILs, which divides the absorption process in two steps; an initial faster absorption at the gas-liquid interface and later slower absorption in the bulk of the IL. Finally, a pseudo-steady-state modelling approach was implemented and validated.

    The web services discovery process in mobile adhoc networks is considered as a very difficult challenge due to the continuous change in the topology of the network and also the lack of a fixed central directory for publishing web services. Several approaches have been proposed which are based on either keywords or identifiers representing the service to be searched or by using a specific scenario of discovery. All of those proposed solutions try to respect the constraints of ad hoc networks such as energy, bandwidth, throughput ... etc. In this paper we present our new proposed model for measuring the cost of the overall energy consumption in ad hoc networks depending on the web services discovery protocols. We also present a new optimized web services discovery protocol in MANET based on cross_layer routing techniques with the dissemination in the routing process at the same time the semantic web services information and a Discovery_Diameter parameter that we have proposed to limit the area of discovery in the network. Finally, we present simulation results of our defined approach showing a significant optimization of the energy consumption level and the average throughput.

    Alpine and arctic lemming populations appear to be highly sensitive to climate change, and when faced with warmer and shorter winters, their well-known high-amplitude population cycles may collapse. Being keystone species in tundra ecosystems, changed lemming dynamics may convey significant knock-on effects on trophically linked species. Here, we analyse long-term (1988–2010), community-wide monitoring data from two sites in high-arctic Greenland and document how a collapse in collared lemming cyclicity affects the population dynamics of the predator guild. Dramatic changes were observed in two highly specialized lemming predators: snowy owl and stoat. Following the lemming cycle collapse, snowy owl fledgling production declined by 98 per cent, and there was indication of a severe population decline of stoats at one site. The less specialized long-tailed skua and the generalist arctic fox were more loosely coupled to the lemming dynamics. Still, the lemming collapse had noticeable effects on their reproductive performance. Predator responses differed somewhat between sites in all species and could arise from site-specific differences in lemming dynamics, intra-guild interactions or subsidies from other resources. Nevertheless, population extinctions and community restructuring of this arctic endemic predator guild are likely if the lemming dynamics are maintained at the current non-cyclic, low-density state.

    Turbinaria turbinata brown seaweeds were tested as carbon electrode material in symmetric, electrochemical supercapacitors. The electrochemical properties of the carbon materials were characterised for their application as supercapacitors using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analyses. Our initial results showed that the optimal behaviour was obtained for the sample prepared by pyrolysis at 800 °C. The average surface area of the carbon was 812 m2/g. Electrochemical tests with an organic electrolyte gave the following interesting results: a capacitance of 74.5 F/g, a specific series resistance of 0.5 Ω cm2 and an ionic resistivity of 1.3 Ω cm2. These results show the promising capacitive properties of carbon derived from seaweeds and their application in electrochemical supercapacitors.

    During the coking process, due to the small width of the carbonization chamber of modern ovens, horizontal expansion of coal generates a pressure on the oven walls. The objective of this thesis, which is part of European project « Swelling Pressure in a Coke Oven, Transmission on Oven walls », is to better understand the wall pressure phenomenon during coking process and to develop a model which can permit to anticipate this phenomenon. For this, a phenomenological model which takes into account the physical chemistry phenomena in presence is developed. An original implementation is proposed for the kinetic of tars condensation and the coal swelling during pyrolysis. The proposed model is the first which reproducing simultaneously the wall pressure and the gas pressure during coking process. The simulation results of coking process of the specific case of Blue Creek coal in the pilot oven of Centre de Pyrolyse de Marienau and the measurements of gas pressure, of temperature and of wall pressure performed during the tests have discrepancies but remain in good agreement. The discrepancies are mainly due to the ignorance of coal properties and its mechanical behavior. The assumption of linear elastic behavior leads to wall pressure overestimation. The sensitivity study permits to conclude that the wall pressure is not directly dependant to the gas pressure and that coal swelling play a causal role. Lors du procédé de cokéfaction, en raison de la faible largeur de la chambre de carbonisation des fours modernes, l’expansion horizontale de la pâte à coke génère une poussée sur les parois de chauffage. L’objectif de cette thèse, qui s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet européen « Swelling Pressure in a Coke Oven, Transmission on Oven walls », est de mieux comprendre le phénomène de poussée des charbons lors de la cokéfaction et de développer un modèle permettant d’anticiper ce phénomène. Pour cela, un modèle phénoménologique prenant en compte les phénomènes physico-chimiques en présence a été développé. Une mise en équation originale est proposée pour la cinétique de condensation des goudrons et le gonflement des grains de charbon lors de la pyrolyse. Le modèle proposé est le premier reproduisant simultanément la poussée sur les piédroits et la pression des gaz produits lors de la cokéfaction. Les résultats de simulation du cas particulier de la cokéfaction du charbon Blue Creek dans le four pilote du Centre de Pyrolyse de Marienau et les mesures de pression, de température et de poussée réalisées lors des essais présentent des écarts mais demeurent en bon accord. Ces écarts sont essentiellement dus à la méconnaissance des propriétés du charbon et de son comportement mécanique. L’hypothèse d’un comportement élastique linéaire entraîne une surestimation de la poussée. L’étude de sensibilité amène, entre autres, à la conclusion que la poussée ne dépend pas directement de la pression des gaz et que le gonflement des grains de charbon joue un rôle déterminant.

    International audience This work exposes the spatio-temporal frequency of seasonal drought in Gharb, a leading agricultural region in the Northwest of Morocco. It is based on the monthly approach of the report precipitation/temperature. The report P < 2T shows that the summer drought is regularly present each year and its length varies from one year to the next. Drought can also accidentally set other seasons of the year.In Gharb, the dry months recorded a trend to decline or stagnation following the stations. This translates into a tendency rather to both rising temperatures than precipitation. However, the definition of drought based on temperature and precipitation parameters does not have the slightestmathematical justification, since it establishes the link between quantities of different nature. On the other hand, water balances, calculated from the confrontation of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration, emphasize drought in terms of water deficit. Potential evapotranspiration is rarely measured with reliability in Gharb, particularly in the studied sites. Ce travail expose la fréquence spatiotemporelle des sécheresses saisonnières dans le Gharb, une région agricole de premier plan située dans le nord-ouest du Maroc. Il est basé sur l’approche mensuelle du rapport précipitations/températures. Le rapport P<2T montre que la sécheresse estivale est régulièrement présente chaque année et sa longueur varie d’une année à l’autre. La sécheresse peut également affecter accidentellement d’autres saisons de l’année.Dans le Gharb, les mois secs enregistrent une tendance à la baisse ou à la stagnation suivant les stations. Cela se traduit par une tendance plutôt à la hausse aussi bien des températures que des précipitations. Toutefois, la définition de la sécheresse reposant sur les paramètres des précipitationset des températures ne possède pas la moindre justification mathématique, puisqu’elle établit le lien entre des grandeurs de nature différente. Par contre, les bilans hydriques, calculés à partir de la confrontation des précipitations et de l’évapotranspiration potentielle, font ressortir la sécheresse entermes de déficit hydrique. L’évapotranspiration potentielle est rarement mesurée avec fiabilité dans le Gharb, notamment au niveau des stations étudiées.

    This paper details a numerical study of solid-liquid phase change heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure with the aim of optimizing the number, dimension, and positioning of fins in the enclosure. The enclosure is exposed on one side to a constant heat flux of 1000 W/m2 for 3 h and both the total fin mass and the PCM mass are kept constant in all simulated cases. The heat diffusion equation in the PCM uses the equivalent heat capacity method while natural convection driven PCM motion in the enclosure is modeled through the buoyancy force, using a modified viscosity and an additional volume force term in the Navier-Stokes momentum conservation equation. Three efficiency assessment parameters are used: (i) the height-averaged temperature of the front hot plate which should remain as low as possible for the longer possible time, (ii) the energy stored inside the PCM as a function of time, and (iii) the heat transfer rate and heat flux between the front plate and the PCM. For each simulated case, complementary data such as the standard deviation of temperature along the heated plate and the ratio of sensible heat to latent accumulation are also calculated. Results show that increasing the number of fins diminishes both the stabilization temperature and the stabilization time of the front plate during phase change, and accelerates the sensible and latent storage of energy in the PCM. Using thinner but longer fins provides the same impact except that the stabilization time also increases as the fin length is increased. Besides, at constant fin mass, varying fin spacing have marginal impact on the latent heat storage performance and on the hot plate temperature stabilization. The study also shows that the surface area plays the largest role in the increase of the heat transfer rate between the front plate and the PCM, while configurations which can promote stronger natural convection lead to higher heat flux. Finally, it was observed that systems allowing easier heat transfer to the back plate during melting provide a higher ratio of sensible heat to latent accumulation, while the standard deviation of the front plate temperature decreases as the number of fins or the spacing between fins increases.

    Predicting likely species responses to an alteration of their local environment is key to decision‐making in resource management, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation practice in the face of global human‐induced habitat disturbance. This is especially true for forest trees which are a dominant life form on Earth and play a central role in supporting diverse communities and structuring a wide range of ecosystems. In Europe, it is expected that most forest tree species will not be able to migrate North fast enough to follow the estimated temperature isocline shift given current predictions for rapid climate warming. In this context, a topical question for forest genetics research is to quantify the ability for tree species to adapt locally to strongly altered environmental conditions (Kremer et al. ). Identifying environmental factors driving local adaptation is, however, a major challenge for evolutionary biology and ecology in general but is particularly difficult in trees given their large individual and population size and long generation time. Empirical evaluation of local adaptation in trees has traditionally relied on fastidious long‐term common garden experiments (provenance trials) now supplemented by reference genome sequence analysis for a handful of economically valuable species. However, such resources have been lacking for most tree species despite their ecological importance in supporting whole ecosystems. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, De Kort et al. () provide original and convincing empirical evidence of local adaptation to temperature in black alder, Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn, a surprisingly understudied keystone species supporting riparian ecosystems. Here, De Kort et al. () use an innovative empirical approach complementing state‐of‐the‐art landscape genomics analysis of A. glutinosa populations sampled in natura across a regional climate gradient with phenotypic trait assessment in a common garden experiment (Fig. ). By combining the two methods, De Kort et al. () were able to detect unequivocal association between temperature and phenotypic traits such as leaf size as well as with genetic loci putatively under divergent selection for temperature. The research by De Kort et al. () provides valuable insight into adaptive response to temperature variation for an ecologically important species and demonstrates the usefulness of an integrated approach for empirical evaluation of local adaptation in nonmodel species (Sork et al. ).

    In Western countries, the consumption of animal protein, which is the predominant protein source, has been decreasing over the last decade. This consumption has been negatively associated with different sustainability parameters in the majority of cases, and studies modelling sustainable diets have shown that the different parameters are not always compatible. Diets that significantly improve different sustainability parameters have been modelled, but the consideration of cultural acceptability is insufficient and requires further investigation. The objective of this thesis was to model acceptable trajectories of rearrangement of protein source consumption to increase nutritional adequacy and to evaluate its impacts on sustainability. The study of protein source consumption in France led to the conclusion that protein intake is adequate for the entire population, but that there are different profiles of protein intake characterized by different levels of nutritional security. A study conducted in 2018 found that meat consumption levels were predicted by attitudes, social norms, and perceived behavioral control related to the reduction of meat consumption. For the stepwise dietary modelling study, it was considered acceptable for an individual to consume a new food if it was widely consumed by individuals with a similar profile of protein intake. This hypothesis was validated by a survey conducted in 2018. The modelling work identified that some dietary recommendations were effective for the general population, but others were specific to certain profiles of protein intake characterized by specific nutritional profiles and food repertoires. Finally, models have identified that systematically targeting more plant proteins during the first dietary modifications allows, despite a slightly lower nutritional adequacy, to obtain better sustainability parameters.; Dans les pays occidentaux, la consommation de protéines animales, majoritaire, diminue depuis une décennie. Elle est, dans la majorité des cas, associée négativement à différents paramètres de durabilité, et les études modélisant des régimes durables ont montré que les différents paramètres n’étaient pas toujours compatibles. Des régimes améliorant largement différents paramètres de durabilité ont été modélisés, mais la prise en compte de l’acceptabilité culturelle est insuffisante et nécessite des approfondissements. L’objectif de cette thèse était de modéliser des trajectoires acceptables de réarrangement de la consommation de sources protéiques pour augmenter l’adéquation nutritionnelle et d’en évaluer les impacts sur la durabilité. L’étude des consommations de sources de protéines en France a permis de conclure que les apports en protéines sont adéquats pour l’ensemble de la population, mais qu’il existe différents profils de consommation protéique, caractérisés par des niveaux de sécurité nutritionnelle différents. Une étude réalisée en 2018 a permis d’établir que les niveaux de consommation de viande étaient prédits par les attitudes, les normes sociales, et l’auto-efficacité perçue vis-à-vis de la réduction de la consommation de viande. Pour les travaux de modélisation pas-à-pas de l’alimentation, il a été considéré acceptable pour un individu de consommer un nouvel aliment, si celui-ci était largement consommé par des individus au profil de consommation protéique similaire. Cette hypothèse a été validée par une enquête en 2018. Les travaux de modélisation ont permis d’identifier que certaines recommandations alimentaires étaient efficaces pour l’ensemble de la population, mais que d’autres étaient spécifiques à certains profils de consommation protéique, caractérisés par des profils nutritionnels et des répertoires alimentaires spécifiques. Enfin, des modèles ont permis d’identifier que viser systématiquement plus de protéines végétales lors des premières modifications diététiques permet, malgré une adéquation nutritionnelle légèrement plus faible, d’obtenir de meilleurs paramètres de durabilité.

    The weekly release of the U.S. inventory level by the DOE-EIA is known as the market mover in the U.S. oil futures market. We uncover suspicious trading patterns in the WTI futures markets in days when the inventory level is released that are higher than market forecasts: there are significantly more orders initiated by buyers in the two hours preceding the official release of the inventory level, with a drop in the average price of -0.25% ahead of the news release. This finding is consistent with informed trading. We also provide evidence of an asymmetric response of the oil price to oil-inventory news, and highlight an over-reaction that is partly compensated in the hours following the announcement.

    Abstract This study demonstrates the coupling of Ionic liquids (ILs) with a membrane contactor for post-combustion CO2 capture at moderate pressures and temperatures. ILs 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate([emim][MeSO4]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide([emim][DCA]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate([emim][EtSO4]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim][Ac]) were selected due to their high thermal stability, moderate viscosity and surface tension, as well as high CO2 solubility. No wetting conditions were confirmed for the polypropylene membrane by measuring contact angle, liquid entry pressure (LEP) and SEM of fiber surface before and after the operation. ILs were recirculated in the setup until reaching pseudo-steady-state. All four ILs were able to capture a substantial amount of CO2 during the specified operation time. Initially, very high values of CO2 mass transfer flux and experimental overall mass transfer coefficient were obtained which further decreased with operation time and reached a nearly constant value at pseudo-steady-state. Effect of CO2 loading of the ILs and temperature on enhancement factor and first order rate constant were evaluated. The absorption behavior and kinetics were strongly influenced by the CO2 concentration in the ILs, which divides the absorption process in two steps; an initial faster absorption at the gas-liquid interface and later slower absorption in the bulk of the IL. Finally, a pseudo-steady-state modelling approach was implemented and validated.

    The web services discovery process in mobile adhoc networks is considered as a very difficult challenge due to the continuous change in the topology of the network and also the lack of a fixed central directory for publishing web services. Several approaches have been proposed which are based on either keywords or identifiers representing the service to be searched or by using a specific scenario of discovery. All of those proposed solutions try to respect the constraints of ad hoc networks such as energy, bandwidth, throughput ... etc. In this paper we present our new proposed model for measuring the cost of the overall energy consumption in ad hoc networks depending on the web services discovery protocols. We also present a new optimized web services discovery protocol in MANET based on cross_layer routing techniques with the dissemination in the routing process at the same time the semantic web services information and a Discovery_Diameter parameter that we have proposed to limit the area of discovery in the network. Finally, we present simulation results of our defined approach showing a significant optimization of the energy consumption level and the average throughput.

    Alpine and arctic lemming populations appear to be highly sensitive to climate change, and when faced with warmer and shorter winters, their well-known high-amplitude population cycles may collapse. Being keystone species in tundra ecosystems, changed lemming dynamics may convey significant knock-on effects on trophically linked species. Here, we analyse long-term (1988–2010), community-wide monitoring data from two sites in high-arctic Greenland and document how a collapse in collared lemming cyclicity affects the population dynamics of the predator guild. Dramatic changes were observed in two highly specialized lemming predators: snowy owl and stoat. Following the lemming cycle collapse, snowy owl fledgling production declined by 98 per cent, and there was indication of a severe population decline of stoats at one site. The less specialized long-tailed skua and the generalist arctic fox were more loosely coupled to the lemming dynamics. Still, the lemming collapse had noticeable effects on their reproductive performance. Predator responses differed somewhat between sites in all species and could arise from site-specific differences in lemming dynamics, intra-guild interactions or subsidies from other resources. Nevertheless, population extinctions and community restructuring of this arctic endemic predator guild are likely if the lemming dynamics are maintained at the current non-cyclic, low-density state.

    Turbinaria turbinata brown seaweeds were tested as carbon electrode material in symmetric, electrochemical supercapacitors. The electrochemical properties of the carbon materials were characterised for their application as supercapacitors using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analyses. Our initial results showed that the optimal behaviour was obtained for the sample prepared by pyrolysis at 800 °C. The average surface area of the carbon was 812 m2/g. Electrochemical tests with an organic electrolyte gave the following interesting results: a capacitance of 74.5 F/g, a specific series resistance of 0.5 Ω cm2 and an ionic resistivity of 1.3 Ω cm2. These results show the promising capacitive properties of carbon derived from seaweeds and their application in electrochemical supercapacitors.
