Natural gas is cheaper than fuel on an energy basis, making it an alternative ship fuel which leads to a reduced operating cost and clean gas environmental conditions. The current study analyses the retrofit of an ageing multi-purpose ship to use liquefied natural gas as a primary ship fuel in the context of a short-ship sea operation. The objective is to transform an existing commercial ageing ship propulsion system into a green energy propulsion one and to analyse the economic feasibility considering the high volatility and increased LNG price. Four scenarios were analysed based on the net present value representing Denying, Disinterested, Good and Acceptable financial cash outflow. It was concluded that in the present economic instability and price of LNG fuel and CO2 taxes, the ship owner needs to rely on the long-term contract of buying LNG fuel to implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep good benefits in shipping.

Advances on vehicular communications are facilitating information sharing through real time communications, critical for the development of driving assistance systems. However, the communication by itself is not enough to reach the most desired target as we need to know which safety-related information should be disseminated. In this work, we bring passive sensors and backscatter communication to the vehicular network world. The idea is to increase the driver (or vehicle) awareness regarding the presence of pedestrians in a crosswalk. Passive sensors and backscatter communication technologies are used for the pedestrians' detection phase, while the vehicular network is used during the dissemination of the detection information to surrounding vehicles. The proposed solution was validated through end-to-end experimentation, with real hardware and in a real crosswalk with real pedestrians and vehicles, demonstrating its applicability.

The current era of computing is witnessing a huge amount of data being generated with every passing moment. This massive data if nourished effectively can open new horizons for the computing world. The modern world is slowly but surely moving towards the automation age where every entity and object is being automated to perform desired tasks without the need of human interventions. This has made the lives of people more convenient and comfortable. Automation has taken over every single field of computing and even beyond. Smart mobility is one such example of automation wherein the users get real time information about the traffic conditions as well as alternate route suggestions in case of traffic jams. Transportation is considered as the backbone of every business. The automated intelligent transportation system (ITS) has completely transformed the way how people, goods and services are transported and is quite important for achieving sustainability. This paper provides an overview of the existing ITS system, concept of smart mobility and existing vulnerabilities in these systems. Their security concerns and scenarios are also analyzed. Furthermore, in this paper the importance and need for securing these intelligent systems is highlighted and future trends in ITS is also suggested. Although ITS and smart mobility technology are already providing convenient transportation and navigational facilities, there is still a huge scope to improve these facilities for the end users. The suggested future trends if integrated in an effective manner can provide exemplary means to provide state-of-the-art navigational facilities and smart mobility in a true sense.

The Bike Sharing System is a sustainable urban transport solution that consists of a fleet of bikes placed in various stations. Users will be satisfied if they find available bikes at their departure station and free docks at the destination. Despite the regulation operations of the system provider (i.e., redistribution of bikes by truck) deeper modifications (bike fleet size or station capacity) are often necessary to ensure a satisfactory service rate. In this paper, we model a sub-graph of a Bike Sharing System using the closed queuing network with a Repetitive-Service-Random-Destination blocking mechanism. This model is solved using the Maximum Entropy Method. This model faithfully reproduces the system dynamics considering the limited capacity of stations. We analyze the performance, particularly, via an overall performance indicator of the system. The various control and monitoring decisions (fleet-size, capacity of stations, incoming and outgoing flow of bikes) are applied to find out the best performance levels. The results demonstrate that the overall performance is robust enough regarding the fleet size changes but it degrades with the increase of the stations’ capacity. Finally, the arrival and departure flows control is an efficient and powerful operational leverage.

In this way, the fast-response capability of gas-fired generator units (GFGUs) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability of electric vehicles (EVs) can play important roles in large-scale integration of VRESs. However, the growth of GFGUs utilization can increase the grade of interdependency between power and natural gas systems. In this condition, the power system tends to demand more reliability and flexibility from the natural gas system, which creates new challenges in power system scheduling. The likely significant growth of EVs can solve this challenge and reduce the correlation between power and natural gas systems, bringing new opportunities for power system scheduling. However, a considerable literature in the field of operation of GFGUs and EVs has only focused on using the hourly discrete time model (HDTM). Undoubtedly, the major limitation of HDTM is its inability to handle the fast sub-hourly dispatch of GFGUs and energy storage capability of EVs. Accordingly, in this paper, this limitation has been solved by the operation of both energy systems with a continuous time model (CTM). The reliability test system with a ten-node gas transmission system has been analysed to show the effectiveness of the proposed problem.

In this way, the fast-response capability of gas-fired generator units (GFGUs) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability of electric vehicles (EVs) can play important roles in large-scale integration of VRESs. However, the growth of GFGUs utilization can increase the grade of interdependency between power and natural gas systems. In this condition, the power system tends to demand more reliability and flexibility from the natural gas system, which creates new challenges in power system scheduling. The likely significant growth of EVs can solve this challenge and reduce the correlation between power and natural gas systems, bringing new opportunities for power system scheduling. However, a considerable literature in the field of operation of GFGUs and EVs has only focused on using the hourly discrete time model (HDTM). Undoubtedly, the major limitation of HDTM is its inability to handle the fast sub-hourly dispatch of GFGUs and energy storage capability of EVs. Accordingly, in this paper, this limitation has been solved by the operation of both energy systems with a continuous time model (CTM). The reliability test system with a ten-node gas transmission system has been analysed to show the effectiveness of the proposed problem.

The growing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) represents an operational challenge to system operators, mainly at the distribution level by introducing congestion and voltage drop problems. To solve these potential problems, a two-level coordination approach is proposed in this study. An aggregation entity, i.e., an EV virtual power plant (EV-VPP), is used to facilitate the interaction between the distribution system operator (DSO) and EV owners considering the decentralized electricity market structure. In level I, to prevent the line congestion and voltage drop problems, the EV-VPP internally respects the line and voltage constraints when making optimal charging schedules. In level II, to avoid power transformer congestion problems, this paper investigates three different coordination mechanisms, or power transformer capacity allocation mechanisms, between the DSO and the EV-VPPs, considering the case of EVs charging and discharging. The three mechanisms include: (1) a market-based approach; (2) a pro-rata approach; and (3) a newly-proposed constrained market-based approach. A case study considering a 37-bus distribution network and high penetration of electric vehicles is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed coordination mechanism, comparing with the existing ones.

Faria; Patrícia Baptista;Abstract In a context where electric mobility is gaining increasing importance as a more sustainable solution for urban environments, this work presents an analysis of electric mobility feasibility and adequacy based on private users' naturalistic driving data. Several scenarios were tested to evaluate different charging event opportunities and their impacts on electric mobility feasibility. In more detail, scenario 1 considered that vehicles would recharge whenever they are stopped for 2, 4 or 6 h, either on weekdays or weekend days; scenario 2 tested the hypothesis of recharging only during the night period; and scenario 3 assumed that vehicles would recharge during the day on weekdays. Furthermore, the potential energy impacts of electric mobility at a city level, by applying a driver and street level approach, were also estimated. Results revealed that electric mobility is highly feasible for weekday urban trips, while weekend trips due to their higher average distance are less suitable to be performed by EVs. Scenario 1, due to its higher recharging opportunities was found to be the best-case scenario. In this case, the percentage of eligible trips was found to be equal to or higher than 94% and 88% on weekdays and weekend days, respectively. Results showed also the lower electric mobility feasibility if considering only daytime charging, on weekdays (scenario 3). However, if considering night charging (scenario 2), the electric mobility eligibility was found to improve significantly. When considering a street level analysis, the potential reduction in energy consumption ranges in average from −60 to −70%, enabling the visualization of higher EV potential, with increasing potential for reducing energy consumption for increasing road grades. Concluding, since electric mobility is particularly suited for urban driving and most households detain 2 or more vehicles, there is a high potential to replace at least one ICEV by an EV. In this case, people may adapt their driving behavior, using the EV for their day-to-day urban driving while the ICEV would be used for longer trips. Nonetheless, the capacity to recharge during night plays a significant role on trips eligibility. Therefore, the availability of home-charge set-ups or a much higher deployment of public charging stations at residential locations are required in order to incentivize drivers to shift towards electric mobility.

The accuracy of voltage transformer (VT) measurements is imperative for the security and reliability of power systems and the equitability of energy transactions. The integration of a substantial number of electric vehicles (EVs) and their charging infrastructures into the grid poses new challenges for VT measurement fidelity, including voltage instabilities and harmonic disruptions. This paper introduces an innovative transformer measurement error prediction model that synthesizes Multivariate Variational Mode Decomposition (MVMD) with a deep learning framework integrating Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional Network and Multi-Head Attention mechanism (BiTCN-MHA). The paper is aimed at enhancing VT measurement accuracy under fluctuating load conditions. Initially, the optimization of parameter selection within the MVMD algorithm enhances the accuracy and interpretability of bi-channel signal decomposition. Subsequently, the model applies the Spearman rank correlation coefficient to extract dominant modal components from both the decomposed load and original ratio error sequences to form the basis for input signal channels in the BiTCN-MHA model. By superimposing predictive components, an effective prediction of future VT measurement error trends can be achieved. This comprehensive approach, accounting for input load correlations and temporal dynamics, facilitates robust predictions of future VT measurement error trends. Computational example analysis of empirical operational VT data shows that, compared to before decomposition, the proposed method reduces the Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) by 17.9% and the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) by 23.2%, confirming the method’s robustness and superiority in accurately forecasting VT measurement error trends.

This paper assesses the economic feasibility of offshore wind farms installed in deep waters considering their internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The method proposed has three phases: geographic phase, economic phase, and restrictions phase. The purpose of the geographic step is to obtain the input values, which will be used in the economic phase. Then, the economic parameters are calculated considering the inputs provided previously. Finally, the bathymetric restriction is added to the economic maps. The case study focused on the Cantabric and North-Atlantic coasts of Spain, areas that have not been studied previously in economic terms regarding floating offshore wind technology. Moreover, several alternatives have been considered, taking into account the type of floating offshore wind structure and the electric tariff. Results indicate which is the best floating offshore wind structure with respect to LCOE, IRR, and NPV, and where is the best location for the connection of a floating offshore wind farm in the region selected.

Natural gas is cheaper than fuel on an energy basis, making it an alternative ship fuel which leads to a reduced operating cost and clean gas environmental conditions. The current study analyses the retrofit of an ageing multi-purpose ship to use liquefied natural gas as a primary ship fuel in the context of a short-ship sea operation. The objective is to transform an existing commercial ageing ship propulsion system into a green energy propulsion one and to analyse the economic feasibility considering the high volatility and increased LNG price. Four scenarios were analysed based on the net present value representing Denying, Disinterested, Good and Acceptable financial cash outflow. It was concluded that in the present economic instability and price of LNG fuel and CO2 taxes, the ship owner needs to rely on the long-term contract of buying LNG fuel to implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep good benefits in shipping.

Advances on vehicular communications are facilitating information sharing through real time communications, critical for the development of driving assistance systems. However, the communication by itself is not enough to reach the most desired target as we need to know which safety-related information should be disseminated. In this work, we bring passive sensors and backscatter communication to the vehicular network world. The idea is to increase the driver (or vehicle) awareness regarding the presence of pedestrians in a crosswalk. Passive sensors and backscatter communication technologies are used for the pedestrians' detection phase, while the vehicular network is used during the dissemination of the detection information to surrounding vehicles. The proposed solution was validated through end-to-end experimentation, with real hardware and in a real crosswalk with real pedestrians and vehicles, demonstrating its applicability.

The current era of computing is witnessing a huge amount of data being generated with every passing moment. This massive data if nourished effectively can open new horizons for the computing world. The modern world is slowly but surely moving towards the automation age where every entity and object is being automated to perform desired tasks without the need of human interventions. This has made the lives of people more convenient and comfortable. Automation has taken over every single field of computing and even beyond. Smart mobility is one such example of automation wherein the users get real time information about the traffic conditions as well as alternate route suggestions in case of traffic jams. Transportation is considered as the backbone of every business. The automated intelligent transportation system (ITS) has completely transformed the way how people, goods and services are transported and is quite important for achieving sustainability. This paper provides an overview of the existing ITS system, concept of smart mobility and existing vulnerabilities in these systems. Their security concerns and scenarios are also analyzed. Furthermore, in this paper the importance and need for securing these intelligent systems is highlighted and future trends in ITS is also suggested. Although ITS and smart mobility technology are already providing convenient transportation and navigational facilities, there is still a huge scope to improve these facilities for the end users. The suggested future trends if integrated in an effective manner can provide exemplary means to provide state-of-the-art navigational facilities and smart mobility in a true sense.

The Bike Sharing System is a sustainable urban transport solution that consists of a fleet of bikes placed in various stations. Users will be satisfied if they find available bikes at their departure station and free docks at the destination. Despite the regulation operations of the system provider (i.e., redistribution of bikes by truck) deeper modifications (bike fleet size or station capacity) are often necessary to ensure a satisfactory service rate. In this paper, we model a sub-graph of a Bike Sharing System using the closed queuing network with a Repetitive-Service-Random-Destination blocking mechanism. This model is solved using the Maximum Entropy Method. This model faithfully reproduces the system dynamics considering the limited capacity of stations. We analyze the performance, particularly, via an overall performance indicator of the system. The various control and monitoring decisions (fleet-size, capacity of stations, incoming and outgoing flow of bikes) are applied to find out the best performance levels. The results demonstrate that the overall performance is robust enough regarding the fleet size changes but it degrades with the increase of the stations’ capacity. Finally, the arrival and departure flows control is an efficient and powerful operational leverage.

In this way, the fast-response capability of gas-fired generator units (GFGUs) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability of electric vehicles (EVs) can play important roles in large-scale integration of VRESs. However, the growth of GFGUs utilization can increase the grade of interdependency between power and natural gas systems. In this condition, the power system tends to demand more reliability and flexibility from the natural gas system, which creates new challenges in power system scheduling. The likely significant growth of EVs can solve this challenge and reduce the correlation between power and natural gas systems, bringing new opportunities for power system scheduling. However, a considerable literature in the field of operation of GFGUs and EVs has only focused on using the hourly discrete time model (HDTM). Undoubtedly, the major limitation of HDTM is its inability to handle the fast sub-hourly dispatch of GFGUs and energy storage capability of EVs. Accordingly, in this paper, this limitation has been solved by the operation of both energy systems with a continuous time model (CTM). The reliability test system with a ten-node gas transmission system has been analysed to show the effectiveness of the proposed problem.

The growing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) represents an operational challenge to system operators, mainly at the distribution level by introducing congestion and voltage drop problems. To solve these potential problems, a two-level coordination approach is proposed in this study. An aggregation entity, i.e., an EV virtual power plant (EV-VPP), is used to facilitate the interaction between the distribution system operator (DSO) and EV owners considering the decentralized electricity market structure. In level I, to prevent the line congestion and voltage drop problems, the EV-VPP internally respects the line and voltage constraints when making optimal charging schedules. In level II, to avoid power transformer congestion problems, this paper investigates three different coordination mechanisms, or power transformer capacity allocation mechanisms, between the DSO and the EV-VPPs, considering the case of EVs charging and discharging. The three mechanisms include: (1) a market-based approach; (2) a pro-rata approach; and (3) a newly-proposed constrained market-based approach. A case study considering a 37-bus distribution network and high penetration of electric vehicles is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed coordination mechanism, comparing with the existing ones.

Faria; Patrícia Baptista;Abstract In a context where electric mobility is gaining increasing importance as a more sustainable solution for urban environments, this work presents an analysis of electric mobility feasibility and adequacy based on private users' naturalistic driving data. Several scenarios were tested to evaluate different charging event opportunities and their impacts on electric mobility feasibility. In more detail, scenario 1 considered that vehicles would recharge whenever they are stopped for 2, 4 or 6 h, either on weekdays or weekend days; scenario 2 tested the hypothesis of recharging only during the night period; and scenario 3 assumed that vehicles would recharge during the day on weekdays. Furthermore, the potential energy impacts of electric mobility at a city level, by applying a driver and street level approach, were also estimated. Results revealed that electric mobility is highly feasible for weekday urban trips, while weekend trips due to their higher average distance are less suitable to be performed by EVs. Scenario 1, due to its higher recharging opportunities was found to be the best-case scenario. In this case, the percentage of eligible trips was found to be equal to or higher than 94% and 88% on weekdays and weekend days, respectively. Results showed also the lower electric mobility feasibility if considering only daytime charging, on weekdays (scenario 3). However, if considering night charging (scenario 2), the electric mobility eligibility was found to improve significantly. When considering a street level analysis, the potential reduction in energy consumption ranges in average from −60 to −70%, enabling the visualization of higher EV potential, with increasing potential for reducing energy consumption for increasing road grades. Concluding, since electric mobility is particularly suited for urban driving and most households detain 2 or more vehicles, there is a high potential to replace at least one ICEV by an EV. In this case, people may adapt their driving behavior, using the EV for their day-to-day urban driving while the ICEV would be used for longer trips. Nonetheless, the capacity to recharge during night plays a significant role on trips eligibility. Therefore, the availability of home-charge set-ups or a much higher deployment of public charging stations at residential locations are required in order to incentivize drivers to shift towards electric mobility.

The accuracy of voltage transformer (VT) measurements is imperative for the security and reliability of power systems and the equitability of energy transactions. The integration of a substantial number of electric vehicles (EVs) and their charging infrastructures into the grid poses new challenges for VT measurement fidelity, including voltage instabilities and harmonic disruptions. This paper introduces an innovative transformer measurement error prediction model that synthesizes Multivariate Variational Mode Decomposition (MVMD) with a deep learning framework integrating Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional Network and Multi-Head Attention mechanism (BiTCN-MHA). The paper is aimed at enhancing VT measurement accuracy under fluctuating load conditions. Initially, the optimization of parameter selection within the MVMD algorithm enhances the accuracy and interpretability of bi-channel signal decomposition. Subsequently, the model applies the Spearman rank correlation coefficient to extract dominant modal components from both the decomposed load and original ratio error sequences to form the basis for input signal channels in the BiTCN-MHA model. By superimposing predictive components, an effective prediction of future VT measurement error trends can be achieved. This comprehensive approach, accounting for input load correlations and temporal dynamics, facilitates robust predictions of future VT measurement error trends. Computational example analysis of empirical operational VT data shows that, compared to before decomposition, the proposed method reduces the Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) by 17.9% and the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) by 23.2%, confirming the method’s robustness and superiority in accurately forecasting VT measurement error trends.

This paper assesses the economic feasibility of offshore wind farms installed in deep waters considering their internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The method proposed has three phases: geographic phase, economic phase, and restrictions phase. The purpose of the geographic step is to obtain the input values, which will be used in the economic phase. Then, the economic parameters are calculated considering the inputs provided previously. Finally, the bathymetric restriction is added to the economic maps. The case study focused on the Cantabric and North-Atlantic coasts of Spain, areas that have not been studied previously in economic terms regarding floating offshore wind technology. Moreover, several alternatives have been considered, taking into account the type of floating offshore wind structure and the electric tariff. Results indicate which is the best floating offshore wind structure with respect to LCOE, IRR, and NPV, and where is the best location for the connection of a floating offshore wind farm in the region selected.

This paper assesses the economic feasibility of offshore wind farms installed in deep waters considering their internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The method proposed has three phases: geographic phase, economic phase, and restrictions phase. The purpose of the geographic step is to obtain the input values, which will be used in the economic phase. Then, the economic parameters are calculated considering the inputs provided previously. Finally, the bathymetric restriction is added to the economic maps. The case study focused on the Cantabric and North-Atlantic coasts of Spain, areas that have not been studied previously in economic terms regarding floating offshore wind technology. Moreover, several alternatives have been considered, taking into account the type of floating offshore wind structure and the electric tariff. Results indicate which is the best floating offshore wind structure with respect to LCOE, IRR, and NPV, and where is the best location for the connection of a floating offshore wind farm in the region selected.
