Organic solar cells utilize an energy-level offset to generate free charge carriers. Although a very small energy-level offset increases the open-circuit voltage, it remains unclear how exactly charge generation is affected. Here we investigate organic solar cell blends with highest occupied molecular orbital energy-level offsets (∆EHOMO) between the donor and acceptor that range from 0 to 300 meV. We demonstrate that exciton quenching at a negligible ∆EHOMO takes place on timescales that approach the exciton lifetime of the pristine materials, which drastically limits the external quantum efficiency. We quantitatively describe this finding via the Boltzmann stationary-state equilibrium between charge-transfer states and excitons and further reveal a long exciton lifetime to be decisive in maintaining an efficient charge generation at a negligible ∆EHOMO. Moreover, the Boltzmann equilibrium quantitatively describes the major reduction in non-radiative voltage losses at a very small ∆EHOMO. Ultimately, highly luminescent near-infrared emitters with very long exciton lifetimes are suggested to enable highly efficient organic solar cells. Donor–acceptor systems with low energy-level offset enable high power efficiency in organic solar cells yet it is unclear what drives charge generation. Classen et al. show that long exciton lifetimes enable efficient exciton splitting and thus generation of free charges while also suppressing voltage losses.

Mariaconcetta Canino in OpenAIREThe optical and photovoltaic properties of Si NCs / SiC multilayers (MLs) are investigated using a membrane-based solar cell structure. By removing the Si substrate in the active cell area, the MLs are studied without any bulk Si substrate contribution. The occurrence is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and light-beam induced current mapping . Optical characterization combined with simulations allows us to determine the absorption within the ML absorber layer, isolated from the other cell stack layers. The results indicate that the absorption at wavelengths longer than 800 nm is only due to the SiC matrix. The measured short-circuit current is significantly lower than that theoretically obtained from absorption within the ML absorber, which is ascribed to losses that limit carrier extraction. The origin of these losses is discussed in terms of the material regions where recombination takes place. Our results indicate that carrier extraction is most efficient from the Si NCs themselves, whereas recombination is strongest in SiC and residual a-Si domains . Together with the observed onset of the external quantum efficiency (EQE) at 700-800 nm, this fact is an evidence of quantum confinement in Si NCs embedded in SiC on device level.

Frederic Hans in OpenAIRENational net zero emission targets could, if fully implemented, reduce best estimates of projected global average temperature increase to 2.0–2.4 °C by 2100, bringing the Paris Agreement temperature goal within reach. A total of 131 countries are discussing, have announced or have adopted net zero targets, covering 72% of global emissions. These targets could substantially lower projected warming as compared to currently implemented policies (2.9–3.2 °C) or pledges submitted to the Paris Agreement (2.4–2.9 °C). Current pledges for emissions cuts are insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement temperature goal. The wave of net zero targets being discussed and adopted could make the Paris goal possible if further countries follow suit.

AbstractWith dwindling reserves of fossil feedstock as a resource for chemicals production, the fraction of chemicals and energy supplied by alternative, renewable resources, such as lignin, can be expected to increase in the foreseeable future. Here, we demonstrate a catalytic process to valorize lignin (exemplified with kraft, organosolv, and sugarcane bagasse lignin) using a mixture of cheap, bio‐renewable ethanol and water as solvent. Ethanol/water mixtures readily solubilize lignin under moderate temperatures and pressures with little residual solids. The molecular weight of the dissolved lignins was shown to be reduced by gel permeation chromatography and quantitative HSQC NMR methods. The use of liquid‐phase reforming of the solubilized lignin over a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst at 498 K and 58 bar is introduced to yield up to 17 % combined yield of monomeric aromatic oxygenates such as guaiacol and substituted guaiacols generating hydrogen as a useful by‐product. Reduction of the lignin dissolved in ethanol/water using a supported transition metal catalyst at 473 K and 30 bar hydrogen yields up to 6 % of cyclic hydrocarbons and aromatics.

The use of graphene as transparent conducting layer in devices that require high temperature processing is proposed. The material shows stability upon thermal treatments up to 1100 °C ifc apped with a sacrificial silicon layer. The use of Cu foil or evaporated Cu as catalysts in Catalytic-Chemical Vapor Deposition growth gives rise to graphene ofs imilar properties, which represents a promising result in view of its direct integration in microelectronic devices. Photovoltaic p-i-n thin film devices were fab- ricated on the as-deposited or annealed graphene membranes and compared with similar devices that incorporate as-deposited Indium Tin Oxide. No degradation in series resistance is observed for the annealed device. A 3.7% and 2.8% photovoltaic conversion efficiency is observed on the devices fabricated on as-transferred and on annealed graphene respectively. The major limitation derives from the high sheet resistance of the as-transferred state-of-the-art material. The results opens the way to the use of graphene in applications that require transparent conducting layers resistant to high temperature pro- cessing.

Walter, A. in OpenAIREThis study assesses the socio-economic impacts in terms of value added, imports and employment of sugarcane-derived bioethanol production in Northeast (NE) Brazil. An extended inter-regional Input–Output (IO) model has been developed and is used to analyse three scenarios, all projected for 2020: a business-as-usual scenario (BaU) which projects current practices, and two scenarios that consider more efficient agricultural practices and processing efficiency (scenario A) and in addition an expansion of the sector into new areas (scenario B). By 2020 in all scenarios, value added and imports increase compared to the current situation. The value added by the sugarcane–ethanol sector in the NE region is 2.8 billion US$ in the BaU scenario, almost 4 billion US$ in scenario A, and 9.4 billion US$ in scenario B. The imports in the region will grow with 4% (BaU scenario), 38% (scenario A) and 262% (scenario B). This study shows that the large reduction of employment (114,000 jobs) due to the replacement of manual harvesting by mechanical harvesting can be offset by additional production and indirect effects. The total employment in the region by 2020 grows with 10% in scenario A (around 12,500 jobs) and 126% in scenario B (around 160,000 jobs). The indirect effects of sugarcane production in the NE are large in the rest of Brazil due to the import of inputs from these regions. The use of an extended inter-regional IO model can quantify direct and indirect socio-economic effects at regional level and can provide insight in the linkages between regions. The application of the model to NE Brazil has demonstrated significant positive socio-economic impacts that can be achieved when developing and expanding the sugarcane–ethanol sector in the region under the conditions studied here, not only for the NE region itself but also for the economy of the rest of Brazil.

Silicon carbide/silicon rich carbide multilayers, aimed at the formation of silicon nanodots for photovoltaic applications, have been studied. The electrical properties have been investigated at the nano-scale by conductive Atomic Force Microscopy (c-AFM) and at macro-scale by temperature dependent conductivity measurements. The mixture is composed of highly conductive Si nanoclusters and moderately conductive SiC nanoclusters in a disordered matrix. The conduction mechanism takes place via band states induced by the disorder at the interface between nanodot clusters. Structural properties have been extracted by optical spectroscopy analyses. The results contribute to the understanding of the microscopical electronic mechanisms of the composite material, which is a candidate for third generation photovoltaics.

H.; and J. Oerlemans;The large uncertainty in future global glacier volume projections partly results from a substantial range in future climate conditions projected by global climate models. This study addresses the effect of global and regional differences in climate input data on the projected twenty-first century glacier contribution to sea-level rise. Glacier volume changes are calculated with a surface mass balance model combined with volume-area scaling, applied to 89 glaciers in different climatic regions. The mass balance model is based on a simplified energy balance approach, with separated contributions by net solar radiation and the combined other fluxes. Future mass balance is calculated from anomalies in air temperature, precipitation and atmospheric transmissivity, taken from eight global climate models forced with the A1B emission scenario. Regional and global sea-level contributions are obtained by scaling the volume changes at the modelled glaciers to all glaciers larger than 0.1 km2 outside the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. This results in a global value of 0.102 ± 0.028 m (multi-model mean and standard deviation) relative sea-level equivalent for the period 2012–2099, corresponding to 18 ± 5 % of the estimated total volume of glaciers. Glaciers in the Antarctic, Alaska, Central Asia and Greenland together account for 65 ± 4 % of the total multi-model mean projected sea-level rise. The projected sea-level contribution is 35 ± 17 % larger when only anomalies in air temperature are taken into account, demonstrating an important compensating effect by increased precipitation and possibly reduced atmospheric transmissivity. The variability in projected precipitation and atmospheric transmissivity changes is especially large in the Arctic regions, making the sea-level contribution for these regions particularly sensitive to the climate model used. Including additional uncertainties in the modelling procedure and the input data, the total uncertainty estimate for the future projections becomes ±0.063 m.

Increased integration of renewable energy resources into the grid may create new difficulties for ensuring a sustainable power grid which drives electric utilities to use a number of cost-effective techniques such as Dynamic line rating (DLR) that enable them to run power networks more efficiently and reliably. DLR forecasting is a technique devised to accurately forecast the maximum current carrying capacity of overhead transmission lines. DLR offers many advantages, including increased renewable energy penetration without system reinforcement, improved grid dependability, and lower congestion costs. So far, many solutions have been proposed for DLR forecasting, which, despite estimating the exact capacity of the DLR, have some problems, such as installing multiple sensors and measurement devices and communication networks with precise calibration, and also neglect cyberattacks which may lead to operators making inappropriate operational choices. To address these issues, in this paper, a novel hybrid deep learning-based DLR forecasting approach called the autoencoder bidirectional long short-term memory (AE-BiLSTM) is efficiently and precisely developed. Several scenarios were developed to test the robustness and accuracy of the proposed methodology using real-world data with and without cyber-attacks. Detection of cyber-attack is done based on the increase in the least square errors of forecasting models. Then, the carefully designed hybrid AE-BiLSTM method reconstructs the falsified measurement data and provides reliable DLR forecasting. Also, a comparative study is carried out. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed hybrid approach can significantly provide acceptable performance even under cyber-attacks and forecast DLR values with the least possible error, outperforming the existing conventional and deep learning-based techniques.

It introduces an algorithm for DSM considering realistic load model and taking into account limited load flexibility and load payback. It then assesses the effectiveness of deployed DSM to achieve set goals when considering realistic constraints. The analysis demonstrates the importance of inclusion of realistic constraints and appropriate load modelling when assessing the effectiveness of wide-scale DSM programs on different aspects of performance of distribution networks with renewable generation.
