This work investigates prosumers' flexibility provision for the optimal operation of active distribution networks in a transactive energy (TE) market. From a prosumer point of view, flexibility can be provided to operators using renewable energy resources (RES) and demand response (DR) through home appliances with the ability to modify their consumption profiles. In the TE market model, the distribution system operator (DSO) is responsible for market-clearing mechanisms and controlling the net power exchange between the distribution network and the upstream grid. The contribution of this work is the enhancement of a strategy to reduce the operational costs of an active distribution network by using prosumers' flexibility provision through an aggregator or a smart building coordinator. To this end, a TE market for both energy and flexibility trading at distribution networks is presented, demonstrating the possibility to fulfill DSO requirements through the flexibility contributions in the day-ahead (DA) and real-time (RT) markets.

End users have become active participants in local electricity market transactions because of the growth of the smart grid concept and energy storage systems (ESS). This participation is optimized in this article using a stochastic two-stage model considering the day-ahead and real-time electricity market data. This model optimally schedules the operation of a Smart Home (SH) to meet its energy demand. In addition, the uncertainty of wind and photovoltaic (PV) generation is considered along with different appliances. In this paper, the participation of an EV (electric vehicle), together with the battery energy storage systems, which allow for the increase in bidirectional energy transactions are considered. Demand Response (DR) programs are also incorporated which consider market prices in real-time and impact the scheduling process. A comparative analysis of the performance of a smart home participating in the electricity market is carried out to determine an optimal DR schedule for the smart homeowner. The results show that the SH’s participation in a real-time pricing scheme not only reduces the operating costs but also leads to better than expected profits. Moreover, total, day-ahead and real-time expected profits are better in comparison with existing literature. The objective of this paper is to analyze the SH performance within the electrical market context so as to increase the system’s flexibility whilst optimizing DR schedules that can mitigate the variability of end-users generation and load demand.

Osorio;With the integration of new power production technologies and the growing focus on dispersed production, there has been a paradigm change in the electricity sector, mostly under a renewable and sustainable way. Consequentially, challenges for profitability as well as correct management of the electricity sector have increased its complexity. The use of forecasting tools that allow a real and robust approach makes it possible to improve system operation and thus minimizing costs associated with the activities of the electric sector. Hence, the forecasting approaches have an essential role in all stages of the electricity markets. In this paper, a hybrid probabilistic forecasting model (HPFM) was developed for short-term electricity market prices (EMP), combining Wavelet Transform (WT), hybrid particle swarm optimization (DEEPSO), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), together with Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). The proposed HPFM was tested and validated with real data from the Spanish and Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) markets, considering the next week ahead. The model was validated by comparing the results with previously published results using other methods.

Goncalves;With the advent of restructuring electricity sector and smart grids, combined with the increased variability and uncertainty associated with electricity market prices (EMP) signals and players' behavior, together with the growing integration of renewable energy sources, enhancing prediction tools are required for players and different regulators agents to face the non-stationarity and stochastic nature of such time series, which must be capable of supporting decisions in a competitive environment with low prediction error, acceptable computational time and low computational complexity. Hybrid and evolutionary approaches are good candidates to surpass most of the previous concern considering time series prediction. In this sense, this work proposes a hybrid model composed by a novel combination of differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (DEEPSO) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to predict, in the short-term, the wind power and EMP, testing its results with real and published case studies, proving its superior performance within a robust prediction software tool.

Osorio;Abstract The non-stationary and stochastic nature of wind power reveals itself a difficult task to forecast and manage. In this context, with the continuous increment of wind farms and their capacity production in Portugal, there is an increasing need to develop new forecasting tools with enhanced capabilities. On the one hand, it is crucial to achieve higher accuracy and less uncertainty in the predictions. On the other hand, the computational burden should be kept low to enable fast operational decisions. Hence, this paper proposes a new hybrid evolutionary-adaptive methodology for wind power forecasting in the short-term, successfully combining mutual information, wavelet transform, evolutionary particle swarm optimization, and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The strength of this paper is the integration of already existing models and algorithms, which jointly show an advancement over present state of the art. The results obtained show a significant improvement over previously reported methodologies.

Osorio;Abstract The non-stationary and stochastic nature of wind power reveals itself a difficult task to forecast and manage. In this context, with the continuous increment of wind farms and their capacity production in Portugal, there is an increasing need to develop new forecasting tools with enhanced capabilities. On the one hand, it is crucial to achieve higher accuracy and less uncertainty in the predictions. On the other hand, the computational burden should be kept low to enable fast operational decisions. Hence, this paper proposes a new hybrid evolutionary-adaptive methodology for wind power forecasting in the short-term, successfully combining mutual information, wavelet transform, evolutionary particle swarm optimization, and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The strength of this paper is the integration of already existing models and algorithms, which jointly show an advancement over present state of the art. The results obtained show a significant improvement over previously reported methodologies.

The novel trend of peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions has allowed traditional consumers to become prosumers, capable of maximizing the usage of their energy production by sharing it with their neighbors. Thus, the P2P market has emerged to allow both prosumers and consumers to trade energy independently from the conventional market. However, while local energy transactions will allow for a more open and decentralized grid, they will nevertheless have a significant impact on the planning, control and operation of distribution grids. Hence, in this paper, an improved model is presented to evaluate the impact of P2P transactions on distribution grid congestion, considering its restrictions and the uncertainty associated with renewable energy sources generation and load. The objective function has been modeled to minimize the transaction costs of each prosumer/consumer. The model was tested on a branch adapted from a 119-bus IEEE test grid, in which different operational scenarios have been considered through case studies, considering the various RES technologies and energy storage systems (ESS) installed by each prosumer/consumer. Comprehensive simulation results indicate that the introduction of smart grid enabling technologies and P2P transactions has led to both technical (voltage profile and grid congestion) and economic benefits for the distribution grid and its users.

But, increasing the number of EVs and mismanagement of their energy in distribution networks would cause higher operational costs and lower network security. This paper evaluates the voltage security of distribution networks in the presence of EVs. Accordingly, the maximization of voltage security margin (VSM) and the minimization of operational cost are considered as the main objective functions in the optimization problem of active and reactive power management. The constraints of the proposed optimization problem include power flow equations, system operating limits and EVs constraints. It is supposed that the EVs are equipped with bidirectional chargers to control active and reactive power, simultaneously. The proposed model is implemented on the 33-bus distribution network to evaluate the performance of the proposed optimization scheme for distribution network management in the presence of EVs.

One important DR scheme is the emergency demand response program (EDRP). This paper focuses on simultaneous implementation of security-constraint unit commitment (SCUC) and EDRP by using an economic model. Moreover, a stochastic optimization method is employed for realistic modelling. Since the combined implementation of SCUC and EDRP results in a complex nonlinear optimization problem, a linearization method to ensure computational efficiency is used. The proposed model is formulated as two-stage Stochastic Mixed-Integer Programming (SMIP) model implemented using GAMS. The implemented model is tested on three case studies using the IEEE 24-bus system. Results are analyzed with a focus on the impact of demand elasticity and electricity prices.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in areas with wholesale energy markets may have significant impacts on the prices of electricity within these markets. These renewable energy sources typically have low or zero marginal prices and thus can bid into energy markets at prices which might be below plants using other generating technologies. This work seeks to understand the impact of these zero marginal cost plants in the Iberian Energy Market. This work makes use of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to evaluate the impact of growing renewable energy generation on the market-clearing price. Real data from the Iberian Energy Market is chosen and used to train the ANN. The scenarios used for renewable energy generation are taken from the newly published national energy and climate plans for both Spain and Portugal. Results show that increasing penetration of renewable energy leads to significant reductions in the forecasted energy price, showing a price decrease of about 23 € /MWh in 2030 compared to the baseline. Increasing solar PV generation has the largest effect on market prices.

Besides, in a deregulated and competitive framework, producers and consumers require short-term forecasting tools to derive their bidding strategies to the electricity market. This paper proposes a novel hybrid computational tool, based on a combination of evolutionary particle swarm optimization with an adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system, for wind power forecasting and electricity prices forecasting in the short-term. The results from two real-world case studies are presented, in order to illustrate the proficiency of the proposed computational tool.

This work investigates prosumers' flexibility provision for the optimal operation of active distribution networks in a transactive energy (TE) market. From a prosumer point of view, flexibility can be provided to operators using renewable energy resources (RES) and demand response (DR) through home appliances with the ability to modify their consumption profiles. In the TE market model, the distribution system operator (DSO) is responsible for market-clearing mechanisms and controlling the net power exchange between the distribution network and the upstream grid. The contribution of this work is the enhancement of a strategy to reduce the operational costs of an active distribution network by using prosumers' flexibility provision through an aggregator or a smart building coordinator. To this end, a TE market for both energy and flexibility trading at distribution networks is presented, demonstrating the possibility to fulfill DSO requirements through the flexibility contributions in the day-ahead (DA) and real-time (RT) markets.

End users have become active participants in local electricity market transactions because of the growth of the smart grid concept and energy storage systems (ESS). This participation is optimized in this article using a stochastic two-stage model considering the day-ahead and real-time electricity market data. This model optimally schedules the operation of a Smart Home (SH) to meet its energy demand. In addition, the uncertainty of wind and photovoltaic (PV) generation is considered along with different appliances. In this paper, the participation of an EV (electric vehicle), together with the battery energy storage systems, which allow for the increase in bidirectional energy transactions are considered. Demand Response (DR) programs are also incorporated which consider market prices in real-time and impact the scheduling process. A comparative analysis of the performance of a smart home participating in the electricity market is carried out to determine an optimal DR schedule for the smart homeowner. The results show that the SH’s participation in a real-time pricing scheme not only reduces the operating costs but also leads to better than expected profits. Moreover, total, day-ahead and real-time expected profits are better in comparison with existing literature. The objective of this paper is to analyze the SH performance within the electrical market context so as to increase the system’s flexibility whilst optimizing DR schedules that can mitigate the variability of end-users generation and load demand.

Consequentially, challenges for profitability as well as correct management of the electricity sector have increased its complexity. The use of forecasting tools that allow a real and robust approach makes it possible to improve system operation and thus minimizing costs associated with the activities of the electric sector. Hence, the forecasting approaches have an essential role in all stages of the electricity markets. In this paper, a hybrid probabilistic forecasting model (HPFM) was developed for short-term electricity market prices (EMP), combining Wavelet Transform (WT), hybrid particle swarm optimization (DEEPSO), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), together with Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). The proposed HPFM was tested and validated with real data from the Spanish and Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) markets, considering the next week ahead. The model was validated by comparing the results with previously published results using other methods.

Goncalves;With the advent of restructuring electricity sector and smart grids, combined with the increased variability and uncertainty associated with electricity market prices (EMP) signals and players' behavior, together with the growing integration of renewable energy sources, enhancing prediction tools are required for players and different regulators agents to face the non-stationarity and stochastic nature of such time series, which must be capable of supporting decisions in a competitive environment with low prediction error, acceptable computational time and low computational complexity. Hybrid and evolutionary approaches are good candidates to surpass most of the previous concern considering time series prediction. In this sense, this work proposes a hybrid model composed by a novel combination of differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (DEEPSO) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to predict, in the short-term, the wind power and EMP, testing its results with real and published case studies, proving its superior performance within a robust prediction software tool.

In this context, with the continuous increment of wind farms and their capacity production in Portugal, there is an increasing need to develop new forecasting tools with enhanced capabilities. On the one hand, it is crucial to achieve higher accuracy and less uncertainty in the predictions. On the other hand, the computational burden should be kept low to enable fast operational decisions. Hence, this paper proposes a new hybrid evolutionary-adaptive methodology for wind power forecasting in the short-term, successfully combining mutual information, wavelet transform, evolutionary particle swarm optimization, and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The strength of this paper is the integration of already existing models and algorithms, which jointly show an advancement over present state of the art. The results obtained show a significant improvement over previously reported methodologies.

The novel trend of peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions has allowed traditional consumers to become prosumers, capable of maximizing the usage of their energy production by sharing it with their neighbors. Thus, the P2P market has emerged to allow both prosumers and consumers to trade energy independently from the conventional market. However, while local energy transactions will allow for a more open and decentralized grid, they will nevertheless have a significant impact on the planning, control and operation of distribution grids. Hence, in this paper, an improved model is presented to evaluate the impact of P2P transactions on distribution grid congestion, considering its restrictions and the uncertainty associated with renewable energy sources generation and load. The objective function has been modeled to minimize the transaction costs of each prosumer/consumer. The model was tested on a branch adapted from a 119-bus IEEE test grid, in which different operational scenarios have been considered through case studies, considering the various RES technologies and energy storage systems (ESS) installed by each prosumer/consumer. Comprehensive simulation results indicate that the introduction of smart grid enabling technologies and P2P transactions has led to both technical (voltage profile and grid congestion) and economic benefits for the distribution grid and its users.

But, increasing the number of EVs and mismanagement of their energy in distribution networks would cause higher operational costs and lower network security. This paper evaluates the voltage security of distribution networks in the presence of EVs. Accordingly, the maximization of voltage security margin (VSM) and the minimization of operational cost are considered as the main objective functions in the optimization problem of active and reactive power management. The constraints of the proposed optimization problem include power flow equations, system operating limits and EVs constraints. It is supposed that the EVs are equipped with bidirectional chargers to control active and reactive power, simultaneously. The proposed model is implemented on the 33-bus distribution network to evaluate the performance of the proposed optimization scheme for distribution network management in the presence of EVs.

The proposed model is formulated as two-stage Stochastic Mixed-Integer Programming (SMIP) model implemented using GAMS. The implemented model is tested on three case studies using the IEEE 24-bus system. Results are analyzed with a focus on the impact of demand elasticity and electricity prices.

The implemented model is tested on three case studies using the IEEE 24-bus system. Results are analyzed with a focus on the impact of demand elasticity and electricity prices.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in areas with wholesale energy markets may have significant impacts on the prices of electricity within these markets. These renewable energy sources typically have low or zero marginal prices and thus can bid into energy markets at prices which might be below plants using other generating technologies. This work seeks to understand the impact of these zero marginal cost plants in the Iberian Energy Market. This work makes use of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to evaluate the impact of growing renewable energy generation on the market-clearing price. Real data from the Iberian Energy Market is chosen and used to train the ANN. The scenarios used for renewable energy generation are taken from the newly published national energy and climate plans for both Spain and Portugal. Results show that increasing penetration of renewable energy leads to significant reductions in the forecasted energy price, showing a price decrease of about 23 € /MWh in 2030 compared to the baseline. Increasing solar PV generation has the largest effect on market prices.

Besides, in a deregulated and competitive framework, producers and consumers require short-term forecasting tools to derive their bidding strategies to the electricity market. This paper proposes a novel hybrid computational tool, based on a combination of evolutionary particle swarm optimization with an adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system, for wind power forecasting and electricity prices forecasting in the short-term. The results from two real-world case studies are presented, in order to illustrate the proficiency of the proposed computational tool.
