AbstractResearch in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1‐km2resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1‐km2pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse‐grained air temperature estimates from ERA5‐Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome‐specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near‐surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil‐related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Here, we focus on impacts that atmospheric circulation causes in addition to the climate warming trends. We combine time series of glacier mass balance from temporal satellite gravimetry measurements (GRACE/GRACE-FO; 2002–2023), active layer thickness in permafrost areas from ESA’s Climate Change Initiative remote sensing and modelling product (2003–2019), and field measurements of the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring Network (2002–2023). Despite regional and system-related complexities, we identify robust covariations between these observations, which vary asynchronously between neighbouring regions and synchronously in regions antipodal to the North Pole. We reveal a close connection with dominant modes of atmosphere circulation, controlling about 75% of the common pan-Arctic impact variability (2002–2022), also affecting the Greenland Ice Sheet. We emphasize that it is necessary to consider such atmospheric driving patterns when projecting impacts, particularly caused by extremes, in an increasingly warmer Arctic.

We present a comprehensive analysis of climatic changes spanning 25 years (1998–2023) at Bayelva (78.92094°N, 11.83333°E) on Spitzbergen, Svalbard. The quality controlled hourly data set includes air temperature, radiation fluxes, snow depth, rainfall, active layer temperature and moisture, and, since 2009, permafrost temperature. Our Bayesian trend analysis reveals an annual air temperature increase of 0.9 ± 0.5°C/decade and strongest warming in September and October. We observed a significant shortening of the snow cover by −14 ± 8 days/decade, coupled with reduced winter snow depth. The active layer simultaneously warmed by 0.6 ± 0.7°C/decade at the top and 0.8 ± 0.5°C/decade at the bottom. While the soil surface got drier, in particular during summer, soil moisture below increased in accordance with the longer unfrozen period and higher winter temperatures. The thawed period prolonged by 10–15 days/decade at different depths. In contrast to earlier top‐soil warming, we observed stable temperatures since 2010 and only little permafrost warming (0.14 ± 0.13°C/decade). This is likely due to recently stable winter air temperature and continuously decreasing winter snow depth. This recent development highlights a complex interplay among climate and soil variables. Our distinctive long‐term data set underscores (a) the changes in seasonal warming patterns, (b) the influential role of snow cover decline, and (c) that air temperature alone is not a sufficient indicator of change in permafrost environments, thereby highlighting the importance of investigating a wider range of parameters, such as soil moisture and snow characteristics.

P. D. Heijmans; Mikhail V. Kozlov; Erik J. van Nieukerken; Niels Martin Schmidt;Chronic, low intensity herbivory by invertebrates, termed background herbivory, has been understudied in tundra, yet its impacts are likely to increase in a warmer Arctic. The magnitude of these changes is however hard to predict as we know little about the drivers of current levels of invertebrate herbivory in tundra. We assessed the intensity of invertebrate herbivory on a common tundra plant, the dwarf birch (Betula glandulosa-nana complex), and investigated its relationship to latitude and climate across the tundra biome. Leaf damage by defoliating, mining and gall-forming invertebrates was measured in samples collected from 192 sites at 56 locations. Our results indicate that invertebrate herbivory is nearly ubiquitous across the tundra biome but occurs at low intensity. On average, invertebrates damaged 11.2% of the leaves and removed 1.4% of total leaf area. The damage was mainly caused by external leaf feeders, and most damaged leaves were only slightly affected (12% leaf area lost). Foliar damage was consistently positively correlated with mid-summer (July) temperature and, to a lesser extent, precipitation in the year of data collection, irrespective of latitude. Our models predict that, on average, foliar losses to invertebrates on dwarf birch are likely to increase by 6--7% over the current levels with a 1 textdegreeC increase in summer temperatures. Our results show that invertebrate herbivory on dwarf birch is small in magnitude but given its prevalence and dependence on climatic variables, background invertebrate herbivory should be included in predictions of climate change impacts on tundra ecosystems.

M. Stuenzi; J. Boike; S. Westermann; M. Langer;AbstractBoreal forests, covering more than half of the world's permafrost, are essential for maintaining permafrost stability. However, climate change and forest shifts are threatening the delicate balance in the thermal equilibrium between the atmosphere, vegetation, and permafrost. We focus on Central Yakutia's ice‐rich boreal regions, specifically two sites located in Spasskaya‐Pad and Churapcha, to investigate the interplay of hydrothermal and climatic conditions that induce thermokarst. We employ a numerical permafrost model (CryoGrid), with a canopy model, and features for excess ground ice, lateral water flow and lake formation, to simulate the underlying physical processes under two forcing scenarios until 2060. The results reveal that forest delays the onset of thermokarst and ground ice melting by 3–18 years, depending on ice depth, climate forcing, and local conditions. Our simulations additionally reveal that a canopy slows excess ice melt by up to 7 years compared to bare ground simulations. Furthermore, in exceptionally warm and wet years, thermokarst initiation occurred rapidly in the bare ground simulations. In contrast, the canopy buffered against these conditions, suggesting that canopies might mitigate the impacts of small temperature and precipitation anomalies. This research highlights the critical role of forests in shaping the trajectory of thermokarst‐related landscape transformations in ice‐rich boreal permafrost regions. With the study region warming faster than average, forest cover transformations could significantly alter the hydrological balance. By integrating thermodynamics, hydrology, and ecology, our findings underscore the importance of forests in delaying thermokarst initiation and slowing ground ice melt, ultimately stabilizing permafrost ecosystems.

Burke; Anne Gädeke; Melissa Head; Moritz Langer; Julia Boike; Sibyll Schaphoff; Christopher P. O. Reyer; Wim Thiery; Wim Thiery; Kirsten Thonicke;Abstract Amplified climate warming has led to permafrost degradation and a shortening of the winter season, both impacting cost-effective overland travel across the Arctic. Here we use, for the first time, four state-of-the-art Land Surface Models that explicitly consider ground freezing states, forced by a subset of bias-adjusted CMIP5 General Circulation Models to estimate the impact of different global warming scenarios (RCP2.6, 6.0, 8.5) on two modes of winter travel: overland travel days (OTDs) and ice road construction days (IRCDs). We show that OTDs decrease by on average −13% in the near future (2021–2050) and between −15% (RCP2.6) and −40% (RCP8.5) in the far future (2070–2099) compared to the reference period (1971–2000) when 173 d yr−1 are simulated across the Pan-Arctic. Regionally, we identified Eastern Siberia (Sakha (Yakutia), Khabarovsk Krai, Magadan Oblast) to be most resilient to climate change, while Alaska (USA), the Northwestern Russian regions (Yamalo, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Nenets, Komi, Khanty-Mansiy), Northern Europe and Chukotka are highly vulnerable. The change in OTDs is most pronounced during the shoulder season, particularly in autumn. The IRCDs reduce on average twice as much as the OTDs under all climate scenarios resulting in shorter operational duration. The results of the low-end global warming scenario (RCP2.6) emphasize that stringent climate mitigation policies have the potential to reduce the impact of climate change on winter mobility in the second half of the 21st century. Nevertheless, even under RCP2.6, our results suggest substantially reduced winter overland travel implying a severe threat to livelihoods of remote communities and increasing costs for resource exploration and transport across the Arctic.

To better understand and assess the future stability of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, we used a laterally coupled version of the one-dimensional CryoGrid3 land surface model to simulate the thermal regimes of the railway subgrade under current climate conditions. By modeling ground subsidence (i.e., by simulating the melting of excess ice) we provide estimates of future subgrade stability under low (Representative Concentration Pathway 2.6 [RCP2.6]) and high (RCP8.5) climate warming scenarios. Our modeled results reveal satisfactory performance with respect to the comparison of measured and modeled ground thermal regimes. Under current climate conditions, we infer that mostly thaw-stable conditions as maximum thaw depths do not reach the embankment base. The sunny side of the embankment (southeast-facing) reveals being more vulnerable to suffering from thaw settlement or thermal erosion than the shady side (northwest-facing). The extent of future railway failure due to thawing permafrost will depend on the magnitude of the warming. For conditions typical of Beiluhe (situated on continuous permafrost in the central Tibetan Plateau), the railway embankment might largely maintain safe operation until the end of the century under a scenario of climate stabilization. In contrast, under strong warming the railway subgrade is likely to destabilize from the 2030s onwards and embankment subsidence is initiated at mid-century through the melting of excess ice.

AbstractDespite the importance of high-latitude surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the rapidly changing Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. Here, we harmonize SEB observations across a network of vegetated and glaciated sites at circumpolar scale (1994–2021). Our variance-partitioning analysis identifies vegetation type as an important predictor for SEB-components during Arctic summer (June-August), compared to other SEB-drivers including climate, latitude and permafrost characteristics. Differences among vegetation types can be of similar magnitude as between vegetation and glacier surfaces and are especially high for summer sensible and latent heat fluxes. The timing of SEB-flux summer-regimes (when daily mean values exceed 0 Wm−2) relative to snow-free and -onset dates varies substantially depending on vegetation type, implying vegetation controls on snow-cover and SEB-flux seasonality. Our results indicate complex shifts in surface energy fluxes with land-cover transitions and a lengthening summer season, and highlight the potential for improving future Earth system models via a refined representation of Arctic vegetation types.

In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset describes the data generated in a literature synthesis, covering 358 study sites on vegetation or glacier (>=60°N latitude), which contained surface energy budget observations. The literature synthesis comprised 148 publications searched on the ISI Web of Science Core Collection.

Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset comprises harmonized, standardized and aggregated in-situ observations of surface energy budget components measured at 64 sites on vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period from 1994 till 2021. The surface energy budget components include net radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, ground heat flux, net shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, surface temperature and albedo, which were aggregated to daily mean, minimum and maximum values from hourly and half-hourly measurements. Data were retrieved from the monitoring networks FLUXNET, AmeriFlux, AON, GC-Net and PROMICE.
