description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type , Journal 2020Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Thanikanti Sudhakar Babu; Krishnakumar R. Vasudevan; Vigna K. Ramachandaramurthy; Suleiman Bala Sani; +2 AuthorsThanikanti Sudhakar Babu; Krishnakumar R. Vasudevan; Vigna K. Ramachandaramurthy; Suleiman Bala Sani; Sansubari Chemud; Rosli Mat Lajim;La tendance toujours croissante des sources d'énergie renouvelables (SER) dans le système électrique a accru l'incertitude dans le fonctionnement et le contrôle du système électrique. The ever increasing trend of renewable energy sources (RES) into the power system has increased the uncertainty in the operation and control of power system. The vulnerability of RES towards the unforeseeable variation of meteorological conditions demands additional resources to support. In such instance, energy storage systems (ESS) are inevitable as they are one among the various resources to support RES penetration. However, ESS has limited ability to fulfil all the requirements of a certain application. So, hybridization of multiple ESS to form a composite ESS is a potential solution. While integrating these different ESS, their power sharing control plays a crucial role to exploit the complementary characteristics of each other. Therefore, this article attempts to bring the numerous control strategies proposed in the literature at one place. Various control techniques implemented for HESS are critically reviewed and the notable observations are tabulated for better insights. Furthermore, the control techniques are classified into broad categories and they are briefly discussed with their limitations. From the carried-out analysis, the challenges faced towards the implementation of HESS for standalone and grid connected microgrid systems are presented. Finally, the future directions are laid out for the researchers to carry out the research and implementation of HESS technologies. Overall, this article would serve as a thorough guide on various control techniques implemented for HESS including their features, limitations and real-time applications.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems have become prominent and have attained the attention of energy engineers, governments and researchers. To achieve the maximum benefit from the PV system in spite of its nonlinear characteristic and environmental conditions, finding a robust maximum power point tracking method is essential. Over two decades, various researchers proposed numerous MPPT methods, but they failed to evaluate their methods on consistency, reliability, and robustness over several numbers of runs. Most of the researchers examined one configuration and they did not to consider the dynamic change in the irradiation conditions. Therefore, in this manuscript, the authors introduced a novel optimization technique Fractional chaotic Flower Pollination Algorithm (FC-FPA), by merging fractional chaos maps with flower pollination algorithm (FPA). The proposed technique, help FPA in extracting the Global Maximum Power Point (GMPP) under different partial shading patterns including with different PV array configurations. The proposed FC-FPA technique is tested and evaluated over 5 different patterns of partial shading conditions. The first three patterns are tested over 4S configuration made with Shell S36 PV module. The other two patterns are applied to the 4S2P configuration of Shell SM55 PV panels. The performance of the proposed variant is investigated by tracking the GMPP for abruptly changing shade pattern. Exclusive statistical analysis is performed over several numbers of runs. Comparison with perturb and observe MPPT technique is established. These results confirm that, the proposed method shows fast convergence, zero oscillation and rapid response for the dynamic change in irradiation with consistent behavior.

To mitigate the microgrid instability despite the presence of dense Constant Power Load (CPL) loads in the system, a number of compensation techniques have already been gone through extensive research, proposed, and implemented around the world. In this paper, a storage based load side compensation technique is used to enhance stability of microgrids. Besides adopting this technique here, Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) and Lyapunov Redesign Controller (LRC), two of the most prominent nonlinear control techniques, are individually implemented to control microgrid system stability with desired robustness. CPL power is then varied to compare robustness of these two control techniques. This investigation revealed the better performance of the LRC system compared to SMC to retain stability in microgrid with dense CPL load. All the necessary results are simulated in Matlab/Simulink platform for authentic verification. Reasons behind inferior SMC performance and ways to mitigate that are also discussed. Finally, the effectiveness of SMC and LRC systems to attain stability in real microgrids is verified by numerical analysis.

Under the present electricity tariff structure in Malaysia, electricity billing on a monthly basis for commercial and industrial consumers includes the net consumption charges together with maximum demand (MD) charges. The use of batteries in combination with photovoltaic (PV) systems is projected to become a viable solution for energy management, in terms of peak load shaving. Based on the latest studies, maximum demand (MD) reduction can be accomplished via a solar PV-battery system based on a few measures such as load pattern, techno-economic traits, and electricity scheme. Based on these measures, the Maximum Demand Reduction (MDRed) Model is developed as an optimization tool for the solar PV-battery system. This paper shows that energy savings on net consumption and maximum demand can be maximized via optimal sizing of the solar PV-battery system using the MATLAB genetic algorithm (GA) tool. GA optimization results revealed that the optimal sizing of solar PV-battery system gives monthly energy savings of up to 20% of net consumption via solar PV self-consumption, 3% of maximum demand (MD) via MD shaving and 2% of surplus power supplied to grid via net energy metering (NEM) in regards to Malaysian electricity tariff scheme and cost of the overall system.

Ramachandaramurthy; Sanjeevikumar Padmanaban; Lucian MIHET-POPA;Distribution systems can form islands when faults occur. Each island represents a subsection with variable boundaries subject to the location of a fault(s) in the system. A subsection with variable boundaries is referred to as island in this paper. For operation in autonomous mode, it is imperative to detect the island configurations and stabilize these subsections. This paper presents a novel scheme for the detection of islanding boundaries and stabilizing the system during autonomous operation. In the first stage, a boundary detection method is proposed to detect the configuration of the island. In the second stage a dynamic voltage sensitivity factor (DVSF) is proposed to assess the dynamic performance of the system. In the third stage, a wide area load shedding program is adopted based on DVSF to shed the load in weak busbars and stabilize the system. The proposed scheme is validated and tested on a generic 18-bus system using a combination of EMTDC/PSCAD and MATLAB softwares.

In this method, when the operating point (OP) leaves the normal operation state, the proposed SPS is initiated to execute the required corrective remedial actions to bring the OP back to a normal state and maintain bus voltages above prespecified thresholds. Considering the local nature of Volt/Var control and in order to execute fast remedial actions, in this approach, the required generation rescheduling or load shedding procedures were selected based on the electrical distance concept. This allows for remedial actions with the highest impact on volt/var control. In addition, in generation rescheduling procedures, the proposed method uses the ability of utility-scale photovoltaic resources, which can change their generation quickly. This plays a major role in maintaining stability of power systems. Efficiency of the proposed algorithm was validated through several scenarios performed in IEEE 39-bus, Nordic32, and PST 16 test systems using DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. Results of these dynamic simulations and their comparison with some previously published methods show the effectiveness of this method in timely executing appropriate remedial actions to maintain system stability.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type , Journal 2020Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Thanikanti Sudhakar Babu; Krishnakumar R.
