This experimental study explores the possibility of using an existing Trombe wall as a space for year-round cultivation to increase building resource efficiency. To do so with the least cost to the building, a small 0.75 m2/5.45 m3 Trombe wall cavity space was retrofitted with shelves placed behind the glazing, additional ventilation, and a watering network to be able to grow 400 hydroponic Kratky basil plants in individual glass jars. Historical thermal observations made at the site over a year-long timespan were contrasted with the experimental readings. When fully equipped, the Trombe wall’s thermal mass increased by 51%, which had a balancing effect on the system, lowering the average daily thermal oscillations from 35.41 °C to 17.88 °C. The living plants and water have also had significant cooling (26.99 °C to 22.91 °C) and humidifying (39.88 to 47.74%) effects. The system’s energy efficiency, however, decreased from 26 to 18% (absorption) and from 85 to 46 (dissipation), lowering its energy contribution to the building by about 30%. The average plant’s lifespan within the Trombe wall was 46 days, with 15% of the specimens surpassing the 100-day mark. Over the course of a year, 20.55 kg of edible greens were grown in the Trombe wall. The experiment has shown that it is possible to grow the plants inside the Trombe wall cavity during the warmer half of the year, revealing many possible ways to improve the space’s comfort, yields, and energy efficiency.

In mechanical equipment, vibration is an inevitable problem due to reasons such as engine operation and high-speed relative motion between transmission system components, which causes the system components to be affected by vibration forces or vibration accelerations. This study focuses on a review of published articles about the effects of mechanical vibration on the characteristics of boiling process in porous media by two aspects: heat transfer performance and bubble dynamics. Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux are two main parameters used to measure the boiling heat transfer characteristics of porous media. For bubble dynamics investigations, properties such as migration, fragment, coalescence, departure diameter and frequency are the focus of research attention. Different mechanical vibration parameters, i.e., direction, frequency, and amplitude, will have different effects on the above characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the greatest influence occurs under resonance conditions, and this has been verified through experimental and simulation calculations. This review highlights the importance of considering mechanical vibrations in the design and optimization of porous media systems for efficient heat transfer applications. Further research is warranted to explore the detailed mechanisms and optimize the vibration parameters for enhanced heat transfer performance in thermal management systems using porous media.

Comfort temperature and sleep quality involving 20 participants were determined in two cases: Case A (arbitrary, controlled air-conditioner setting) and Case B (adjustment of 3 °C higher than the setting of Case A with cool bed linen). Data of indoor thermal comfort and electricity consumption were collected every night throughout the measurement period. Questionnaires on thermal comfort and sleep quality were distributed twice a night for a duration of three nights for each case; the first night was for respondents’ adaptation and the following two nights were for measurement. The sleep quality of the respondents was objectively measured using a commercially available activity tracker. Results found that most respondents were thermally comfortable in both cases, with 39% lower energy consumption reported for Case B compared to Case A. The thermal conditions of Case B were found to be more tolerable than those of Case A. Most respondents reported to have a calm and satisfied sleep for both cases. Comfort temperature and Sleep Efficiency Index (SEI) were found to be maintained in both cases.

Hooman Farzaneh in OpenAIREReal-time pricing demand response programs (RTP-DRPs) are practical measures that ensure the end user's profitability from using electricity by adjusting the supply and demand equilibrium without activating costly solutions. This study explores the potential of RTP-DRPs by developing and applying a region-wise modeling approach based on maximizing the end user's social welfare in the wholesale electricity market in Japan. The regions of the wholesale market are classified based on their response into regions with excess supply, regions with high demand burden, and regular suppliers of inter-regional connections. The results revealed that the RTP-DRPs could potentially reduce the peak demand of the residential sector in Chubu, Chugoku, Kansai, Kyushu, Tokyo, and Tohoku by 1.91%-7.81%. Meanwhile, in Hokkaido, Hokuriku, and Shikoku, by 16.13%-22.9%. The avoided greenhouse emission (GHG) in Tokyo is estimated to be 82.6 and 192.2 tons in summer and winter, respectively.

In recent years, there has been a rapid deployment of PV and battery installation in residential sector. In this regard, optimal planning of PV-battery systems is a critical issue for the designers, consumers, and network operators due to high number of parameters that can affect the optimization problem. This paper aims to present a comprehensive and critical review on the effective parameters in optimal planning process of solar PV and battery storage system for grid-connected residential sector. The key parameters in process of optimal planning for PV-battery system are recognized and explained. These parameters are economic and technical data, objective functions, energy management systems, design constraints, optimization algorithms, and electricity pricing programs. A timely review on the state-of-the-art studies in PV-battery optimal planning is presented. The challenges, trends and latest developments in the topic are discussed. At the end, scopes for future studies are developed. It is found that new guidelines should be provided for the customers based on various electricity rates and demand response programs. Also, several design considerations like grid dependency and resiliency need further investigation in the optimal planning of PV-battery systems.

Ievgen Zaitsev in OpenAIREAbstractEnhancing the efficiency of the electric vehicle’s powertrain becomes a crucial focus, wherein the control system for the traction motor plays a significant role. This paper presents a novel electric vehicle traction motor control system based on a robust predictive direct torque control approach, an improved version of the conventional DTC, where the traditional switching table and the hysteresis regulators are substituted with a predictive block based on an optimization algorithm. Additionally, a robust predictive speed loop regulator is employed instead of the proportional-integral regulator, which integrates a new cost function with a finite horizon, incorporating integral action into the control law based on a Taylor series expansion. This technique’s primary benefit is its independence from the necessity to measure and observe external disturbances, as well as uncertainties related to parameters. The effectiveness of the suggested system was confirmed through simulation and experimental results under the OPAL-RT platform. The findings indicate that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional method in terms of rejecting disturbances, exhibiting robustness to variations in parameters, and minimizing torque ripple.

Renewed COVID-19 outbreaks and uneven vaccination progress are prolonging the fight against the disease in developing Asia. This is contributing to a divergence in growth paths in the region that is partly being determined by the progress on tackling COVID-19. Asian Development Outlook 2021 Update raises regional growth forecasts for East Asia and Central Asia, and revises them down for South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The main risks to the region’s economic prospects still center on the pandemic, particularly the emergence of new variants, lagging vaccine rollouts, and waning vaccine effectiveness. As economies recover from the pandemic, the threats of climate change will take center stage again. Sustainable food production and agricultural systems that are resilient to climate change will be crucial for developing Asia. To transform agriculture in the region, its economies must tackle challenges from changing consumer demand, changing demographics, and a changing and more fragile environment.

Aquaponics systems and technologies are growing primary industries in many countries, with high environmental and socio-economic advantages. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system that produces aquatic animals and plants in a new way using recirculated water and nutrients. With a growing world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, food production sustainability is a primary issue in today’s world agenda, and aquaponics and aquaculture systems can be potential contributors to the challenge. Observing the climate changes and global warming’s impact on the ecosystem, decreasing aqua animal stocks, and responding to increasing demand are turning points in the sustainability era. In the past 15 years, fish production has doubled, thus denoting that aquaponics transforms into commercial scales with a revolutionized production, high efficiency, and fewer resources’ utilization, thus requiring proper operation and management standards and practices. Therefore, this study aims to shape a new framework for sustainable aquaponics modeling and utilization as the all-in-one solution platform covering technical, managerial, socio-economic, institutional, and environmental measures within the suitability requirements. The proposed model in this study offers a systematic approach to the design and implementation of sustainability-efficient aquaponics and aquaculture systems. Through an exhaustive coverage of the topic, this research effort can be counted as a practical reference for researchers, scholars, experts, practitioners, and students in the context of aquaponics and aquaculture studies.

It corresponds to the 2030 aspirations of the United Nations to enhance and promote the sustainable development of human society. The current paper explores the impact of fiscal hedging and R&D in energy Using a green-energy system in SDGs. To do this, we used TOPSIS and QARDL methodologies on a 21-year dataset of South and Southeast Asian economies from 2000 to 2020. The study results show that fiscal hedging contributes favourably to the environmental degradation of the underlying economy. Research and development (R&D) in renewables has contributed negatively to ecological degradation and SDGs in the economies of South & Southeast Asia. This study suggests policy guidelines for advanced and developing economies based on fiscal stability and technical innovation through R&D to meet SDG.

Abstract Hydrogen lines from forming planets are crucial for understanding planet formation. However, the number of planetary hydrogen line detections is still limited. Recent JWST/NIRSpec observations have detected Paschen and Brackett hydrogen lines at TWA 27 B (2M1207b). Although classified as a planetary- mass companison (PMC) rather than a planet due to its large mass ratio to the central star, TWA 27 B’s hydrogen line emissions are expected to be same as the planetary one, given its small mass (≈5M J). We aim to constrain the accretion properties and accretion geometry of TWA 27 B, contributing to our understanding of hydrogen-line emission mechanisms common to both PMCs and planets. We conduct spectral fitting of four bright hydrogen lines (Pa-α, Pa-β, Pa-γ, Pa-δ) with an accretion-shock emission model tailored for forming planets. We estimate the mass accretion rate at M ̇ ≈ 3 × 10 − 9 M J yr − 1 with our fiducial parameters, though this is subject to an uncertainty of up to factor of ten. Our analysis also indicates a dense accretion flow, n ≳ 1013 cm−3 just before the shock, implying a small accretion-shock filling factor f f on the planetary surface (f f ≲ 5 × 10−4). This finding suggests that magnetospheric accretion is occurring at TWA 27 B. Additionally, we carry out a comparative analysis of hydrogen-line emission color to identify the emission mechanism, but the associated uncertainties proved too large for definitive conclusions. This underscores the need for further high-precision observational studies to elucidate these emission mechanisms fully.
