The paper presents a preliminary technical-economic comparison between a 3 kV DC railway and the use of trains with on-board storage systems. Numerical simulations have been carried out on a real railway line, which presents an electrified section at 3 kV DC and a non-electrified section, currently covered by diesel-powered trains. Different types of ESS have been analyzed, implementing the models in Matlab/Simulink environment. A preparatory economic investigation has been carried out.

This paper presents an experimental application of LiFePO4 battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to primary frequency control, currently being performed by Terna, the Italian transmission system operator (TSO). BESS performance in the primary frequency control role was evaluated by means of a simplified electrical-thermal circuit model, taking into account also the BESS auxiliary consumptions, coupled with a cycle-life model, in order to assess the expected life of the BESS. Numerical simulations have been carried out considering the system response to real frequency measurements taken in Italy, spanning a whole year; a parametric study taking into account different values of governor droop and of BESS charge/discharge rates (C-rates) was also performed. Simulations, fully validated by experimental results obtained thus far, evidenced a severe trade-off between expected lifetime and overall efficiency, which significantly restricts the choice of operating parameters for frequency control.

The study reports the evaluations of energy recovery through the train braking. The simulations were carried out on an Italian 3 kV d.c. railway line used for high frequency transport. Several cases of braking phases were studied and the energy returned into the system, used by other trains, was reported. The energy dissipated on the on-board rheostat are also highlighted, considering the possibility of reintroducing the recovered energy into the primary power supply through reversible ESSs or storage in ESSs.

The paper proposes a methodological approach to manage the electric vehicles recharging in an isolated power system characterized by low short circuit power. Focusing on harmonic disturbances, current harmonics injected in the network depend on the specific EV power converter. The model carried out allows for the evaluation of harmonic disturbances under variable conditions for non-linear loads and their harmonic spectra. The methodology allows estimating both current and voltage total harmonic distortion (THDV, THDI) at the point of common coupling (PCC). An algorithm able to manage and control the EV charging in a parking area has been developed in order to keep the THDV under a threshold limit.

Abstract The paper proposes a novel approach to modelling time-varying non-linear loads in power systems, based on demand conditions. The model allows a pre-evaluation of harmonic disturbances under variable conditions using normal and uniform distribution to randomize the electrical values of the non-linear loads and the related harmonic spectra. A measurement campaign conducted on an industrial area, a deposit/maintenance and repair site utilized for trains in operation on the metro line B of Rome, has been taken into account to verify the model performance. The methodology allows estimating the voltage total harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling. Through a statistical analysis, the harmonic distortion distribution via common normality tests was evaluated. The procedure has been used also to a harmonic disturbance pre-evaluation due to a future introduction of electric vehicles charging stations in the area.

The paper describes a project dealing with the deployment of an e-mobility service for persons with disabilities. The service is focused on the movements of people with disabilities within and between buildings of Sapienza University of Rome, dislocated in different areas of the city. A methodology suited to design correctly the service is explained. For each connection, different routes and electric vehicles are analyzed in terms of travel time, energy consumption and battery state of charge by a software developed by the authors; the most suited routes and electric vehicles can be thus chosen. Amongst the numerous connections analyzed in the project, the paper reports and discusses results of a single case study, in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodological approach.

Abstract The paper focuses on the evaluation of the impact on residential buildings of innovative control logics defined for a rational utilization of the electric loads and air-conditioning systems. The control logics are implementable thanks to a Decision Support and Energy Management Systems developed by the same authors and easily installable in new and still-existing houses. The paper shows how a significant reduction of the primary energy consumption can be obtained by controlling the air-conditioning units together with the other electric loads of the house. After having explained how the control logics operate, a simulation tool is described, developed for a preliminary evaluation of their effects on the energy consumptions of residential buildings in the design stage. An application of the simulation tool on a typical house, considering different scenarios and varying the climatic conditions and the energy performance class of the envelope, is presented. Finally, a measurement campaign on two real existing houses, equipped with the Decision Support and Energy Management System, is described, and the effects of the control logics are assessed.

The paper proposes a methodology to define the architecture of the power unit of a UFC (Ultra Fast Charging) station for electric vehicles (EVs), capable of reaching a power of 350 kW. The main goal is to improve the efficiency of the system defining the best configuration by a MATLAB software (BEA – Best Efficiency Architecture) developed by the authors. The software allows defining the best architecture taking into account efficiency-power curves of all AC/DC and DC/DC power modules currently available on the market, thus increasing energy savings. Architectures based on different connection of AC/DC and DC/DC converters using DC bus have been taken considered. The best configuration found has been simulated using Simulink software, performing time-domain electrical simulations in order to verify and validate the architecture chosen.

Abstract This study illustrates how selected instrument voltage transformers (VTs-I) behave in a transitory state. Some laboratory tests are conducted on medium voltage (MV) inductive voltage types to evaluate the voltage transferred from primary to secondary windings when a fast voltage impulse (1.2/50 μs) excites three machines constructively in different ways. Possible effects of metal parts present in the laboratory on the VTs-I behavior are analyzed, and other tests are conducted to determine a suitable shielding for the VTs-I. In order to interpret the experimental results, a theoretical study is performed using a simplified model of the instrument transformer. Finally, characteristic parameters are assigned values that were derived from experimental tests.
