The main target of this research work is to model the output performance of adsorption water desalination system (AWDS) in terms of switching and cycle time using artificial intelligence. The output performance of the ADC system is expressed by the specific daily water production (SDWP), the coefficient of performance (COP), and specific cooling power (SCP). A robust Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model of SDWP, COP, and SCP was built using the measured data. To demonstrate the superiority of the suggested ANFIS model, the model results were compared with those achieved by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) based on the maximum coefficient of determination and minimum error between measured and estimated data in addition to the mean square error (MSE). Applying ANOVA, the average coefficient-of-determination values were 0.8872 and 0.8223, respectively, for training and testing. These values are increased to 1.0 and 0.9673, respectively, for training and testing thanks to ANFIS based modeling. In addition, ANFIS modelling decreased the RMSE value of all datasets by 83% compared with ANOVA. In sum, the main findings confirmed the superiority of ANFIS modeling of the output performance of adsorption water desalination system compared with ANOVA.

In this study, experiments were conducted to compare the heat transfer performance and pressure drop characteristics in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) for 30° and 60° chevron angles using water based Al2O3 nanofluid at the concentrations from 0 to 0.5 vol.% for different Reynolds numbers. The thermo-physical properties has been determined and presented in this paper. At 0.5 vol% concentration, the maximum heat transfer coefficient, the overall heat transfer coefficient and the heat transfer rate for 60° chevron angle have attained a higher percentage of 15.14%, 7.8% and 15.4%, respectively in comparison with the base fluid. Consequently, when the volume concentration or Reynolds number increases, the heat transfer coefficient and the overall heat transfer coefficient as well as the heat transfer rate of the PHE (Plate Heat Exchangers) increases respectively. Similarly, the pressure drop increases with the volume concentration. 60° chevron angle showed better performance in comparison with 30° chevron angle.

However, the research question that the past empirics have overlooked is whether ERV has any role in helping an emerging economy like China in its journey toward a renewable energy transition. To answer this question, this analysis intends to scrutinize the nexus between ERV and renewable energy investment (REI) in China over 1991Q1-2021Q4. Moreover, due to the asymmetric behavior of ERV, we have based our analysis on the asymmetric assumption. For analyzing the short and long-run impacts of ERV on REI in China, we used the linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL methods. In the long term, the ARDL model predicts that stricter environmental policies and higher GDP will lead to more investment in renewable energy. As far as the nonlinear model is concerned, the long-term negative change in ERV does not affect REIs, whereas a long-term positive change in ERV reduces such investments. Likewise, unfavorable short-term exchange rate shocks encourage REI while positive short-term shocks discourage such development. Moreover, investment in renewable energy is bolstered by GDP, environmental policy strictness, and financial development, but is dampened by CO2 emissions in the short term in both models. On the basis of these results, we suggest that policymakers should consider implementing measures to stabilize exchange rates to promote investment in renewable energy.

Agriculture is the largest sector of Pakistan’s economy, contributing almost 22% to the GDP and employing almost 45% of the total labor force. The two largest food crops, wheat and rice, contribute 3.1% and 1.4% to the GDP, respectively. The objective of this research was to calculate the energy return on investment (EROI) of these crops on a national scale from 1999 to 2009 to understand the size of various energy inputs and to discuss their contributions to the energy output. Energy inputs accounted for within the cropping systems included seed, fertilizer, pesticide, human labor, tractor diesel, irrigation pump electricity and diesel, the transport of fertilizer and pesticide, and the embodied energy of tractors and irrigation pumps. The largest per-hectare energy inputs to wheat were nitrogen fertilizer (52.6%), seed (17.9%), and tractor diesel (9.1%). For rice, the largest per-hectare energy inputs were nitrogen fertilizer (32%), tube well diesel (19.8%), and pesticide (17.6%). The EROI of wheat showed a gradual downward trend between 2000 and 2006 of 21.3%. The trend was erratic thereafter. Overall, it ranged from 2.7 to 3.4 with an average of 2.9 over the 11-year study period. The overall trend was fairly consistent compared to that of rice which ranged between 3.1 and 4.9, and averaged 3.9. Rice’s EROI dipped sharply in 2002, was erratic, and remained below four until 2007. It rose sharply after that. As energy inputs increased, wheat outputs increased, but rice outputs decreased slightly. Rice responded to inputs with greater output and an increase in EROI. The same was not true for wheat, which showed little change in EROI in the face of increasing inputs. This suggests that additional investments of energy in rice production are not improving yields but for wheat, these investments are still generating benefits. The analysis shows quantitatively how fossil energy is a key driver of the Pakistani agricultural system as it traces direct and indirect energy inputs to two major food crops.

In this paper, a ferrofluid-based cooling technique is proposed for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, where ferrofluid flow can be easily altered by the application of an external magnetic field leading to enhanced heat transfer from the hot surface of PV systems. The effect of both constant and alternating magnetic field on ferrofluid flow through a minichannel is explored numerically in the present work. A detailed parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of actuation frequencies of alternating magnetic field (0.5–20 Hz) and Reynolds numbers (Re = 24, 60, and 100) on heat transfer characteristics of ferrofluid. An overall enhancement of 17.41% is observed for heat transfer of ferrofluid in the presence of magnetic field compared to the base case of no magnetic field. For the case of alternating magnetic field, a critical actuation frequency is observed for each Reynolds number above which heat transfer is observed to decrease. The enhancement or decrease in heat transfer of ferrofluid is found to depend on several factors such as actuation frequency of alternating magnetic field, Reynolds numbers of ferrofluid flow, and formation/dispersion of stagnant layers of ferrofluid at the magnet location. Preliminary visualization of ferrofluid flow is also carried out to provide a qualitative insight to the nature of transportation of ferrofluid in the presence of an alternating magnetic field.

The model results are used to estimate the optimal portfolio weights and hedge ratios. The empirical findings suggest no short-run price transmission between world oil prices and stock sectors of Pakistan Stock Exchange. Only the past unexpected shocks in world oil prices has significant effect on the volatility of sectoral stock returns of Pakistan Stock Exchange, and no volatility spillover exist between world oil price and stock sectors. The optimal portfolio weights and hedge ratios for oil/stock holdings are sensitive to sectors considered. These findings are of great interest for policy makers, hedge fund managers, [Formula: see text] investors and market participants.

The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of pictured letters mnemonics strategy in learning similarEnglish language letters among students with learning disabilities in Saudi Arabia according to experimental group(1) and (2), control group, gender, and interaction between them. The study sample comprised (90) students withlearning disabilities who were randomly distributed to three equal groups. While the first experimental group wastaught using the modified letter method, the second experimental group was taught using the method of bothmodified and abstract letters, and the control group was taught in the traditional way. To measure the effectiveness ofthe strategy, the authors applied (pre, post, and follow-up) tests. As a result, two-way ANOVA indicated that therewere significant differences attributed to the teaching method, in favor of the method of both modified and abstractletters, while there were no statistically significant differences due to gender or interaction between the teachingmethod and gender. The same results were obtained from the follow-up test. Accordingly, a set of recommendationswere made.

In this paper, we compare and benchmark two different approaches to non-linear topology optimization of District Heating Networks in terms of computational cost and optimality gap. The first approach solves a mixed-integer non-linear optimization problem that resolves the binary constraints of pipe routing choices using a combinatorial optimization approach. The second approach solves a relaxed optimization problem using an adjoint optimization approach, and enforces a discrete network topology through penalization. Our benchmark shows that the relaxed penalized problem has a polynomial computational cost scaling, while the combinatorial solution scales exponentially, making it intractable for practical-sized networks. We also evaluate the optimality gap between the two approaches on two different District Heating Network optimization cases. We find that the mixed-integer approach outperforms the adjoint approach on a single-producer case, but the relaxed penalized problem is superior on a multi-producer case. Based on this study, we discuss the importance of initialization strategies for solving the optimal topology and design problem of District Heating Networks as a non-linear optimization problem.

Suhail Hussain; Taha Selim Ustun;The advent of modern artificial intelligence methods for performance improvement of optimal control strategy has paved a way for providing a reliable operation of power systems. Based on the modern advancements in such techniques, the present paper provides a detailed comparison for finding the optimal control strategy using such techniques. This is exhibited by developing a novel control strategy in the form of a 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller for concurrent frequency-voltage control of a hybrid power system. The hybrid power system comprises of renewable generations in the form of solar-thermal, wind plants. Moreover, the modern day electric vehicles (EVs) are also incorporated as energy storage and operate in vehicle-to-grid mode. The developed control strategy is compared with established industrial controllers to prove its dominance based on concurrent frequency-voltage control of the hybrid power system. Firstly, the controller gains are optimized using magnetotactic bacteria optimization (MBO) technique. Then, the developed control strategy is tuned using artificial neural network (ANN) methodology. Based on the simulation outcomes, the results for frequency deviations, voltage deviations and tie-line power deviations are compared with MBO and ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller. The simulations are carried out on one-area, two-area and standard IEEE-39 bus power systems for in depth validation. Results show that the ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller has superior performance with respect to MBO optimized one. The effects of modern day EVs and renewable generations on the power system is studied broadly.

Suhail Hussain; Taha Selim Ustun;The advent of modern artificial intelligence methods for performance improvement of optimal control strategy has paved a way for providing a reliable operation of power systems. Based on the modern advancements in such techniques, the present paper provides a detailed comparison for finding the optimal control strategy using such techniques. This is exhibited by developing a novel control strategy in the form of a 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller for concurrent frequency-voltage control of a hybrid power system. The hybrid power system comprises of renewable generations in the form of solar-thermal, wind plants. Moreover, the modern day electric vehicles (EVs) are also incorporated as energy storage and operate in vehicle-to-grid mode. The developed control strategy is compared with established industrial controllers to prove its dominance based on concurrent frequency-voltage control of the hybrid power system. Firstly, the controller gains are optimized using magnetotactic bacteria optimization (MBO) technique. Then, the developed control strategy is tuned using artificial neural network (ANN) methodology. Based on the simulation outcomes, the results for frequency deviations, voltage deviations and tie-line power deviations are compared with MBO and ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller. The simulations are carried out on one-area, two-area and standard IEEE-39 bus power systems for in depth validation. Results show that the ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller has superior performance with respect to MBO optimized one. The effects of modern day EVs and renewable generations on the power system is studied broadly.

SummaryExtensive research and development in the processes of production and generation of hydrogen are needed to make renewable hydrogen cost‐competitive with fossil hydrogen. As a result, developing hydrogen energy from low‐cost components and synthesizing it from renewable resources is an important issue that can be considered a global challenge. The current research provided a continuous H2 energy production from waste aluminum in a water medium using copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) as catalysts in the reaction. CuO NPs have been prepared by a green, easy, inexpensive, and systematic method using Catha edulis L. (Khat) extract as reducing and capping agents. Separately, CuO NPs prepared in an alkaline media using the conventional hydrothermal process have been described and reported for comparison. Multidisciplinary tools were used to characterize the powders for structural, morphological, and surface aspects. CuO NPs were homogeneous, well‐dispersed, and have fine diameters with an average of 6 nm, owing to the abundant biomolecules in the plant extract. The synthesized samples were utilized as catalysts for H2 production from industrial waste aluminum with a 1/0.02 ration of Al/CuO by weight. The primary results revealed a higher H2 production yield and rapid rate in alkaline than acidic mediums. Under all conditions, the CuO NPs prepared from the extract had better catalytic activity than those prepared by a conventional method. The results proved that the reaction temperature prompts the reaction kinetics more than other parameters. The optimum H2 yield could be optimized at a temperature of 70°C, 1/50 ratio of CuO/waste Al, and near‐neutral solutions. The above conditions are ideal for designing a continuous production reactor. The hydrogen generated using industrial waste aluminum in the present system is a cost‐effective and sustainable approach.

The main target of this research work is to model the output performance of adsorption water desalination system (AWDS) in terms of switching and cycle time using artificial intelligence. The output performance of the ADC system is expressed by the specific daily water production (SDWP), the coefficient of performance (COP), and specific cooling power (SCP). A robust Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model of SDWP, COP, and SCP was built using the measured data. To demonstrate the superiority of the suggested ANFIS model, the model results were compared with those achieved by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) based on the maximum coefficient of determination and minimum error between measured and estimated data in addition to the mean square error (MSE). Applying ANOVA, the average coefficient-of-determination values were 0.8872 and 0.8223, respectively, for training and testing. These values are increased to 1.0 and 0.9673, respectively, for training and testing thanks to ANFIS based modeling. In addition, ANFIS modelling decreased the RMSE value of all datasets by 83% compared with ANOVA. In sum, the main findings confirmed the superiority of ANFIS modeling of the output performance of adsorption water desalination system compared with ANOVA.

In this study, experiments were conducted to compare the heat transfer performance and pressure drop characteristics in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) for 30° and 60° chevron angles using water based Al2O3 nanofluid at the concentrations from 0 to 0.5 vol.% for different Reynolds numbers. The thermo-physical properties has been determined and presented in this paper. At 0.5 vol% concentration, the maximum heat transfer coefficient, the overall heat transfer coefficient and the heat transfer rate for 60° chevron angle have attained a higher percentage of 15.14%, 7.8% and 15.4%, respectively in comparison with the base fluid. Consequently, when the volume concentration or Reynolds number increases, the heat transfer coefficient and the overall heat transfer coefficient as well as the heat transfer rate of the PHE (Plate Heat Exchangers) increases respectively. Similarly, the pressure drop increases with the volume concentration. 60° chevron angle showed better performance in comparison with 30° chevron angle.

However, the research question that the past empirics have overlooked is whether ERV has any role in helping an emerging economy like China in its journey toward a renewable energy transition. To answer this question, this analysis intends to scrutinize the nexus between ERV and renewable energy investment (REI) in China over 1991Q1-2021Q4. Moreover, due to the asymmetric behavior of ERV, we have based our analysis on the asymmetric assumption. For analyzing the short and long-run impacts of ERV on REI in China, we used the linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL methods. In the long term, the ARDL model predicts that stricter environmental policies and higher GDP will lead to more investment in renewable energy. As far as the nonlinear model is concerned, the long-term negative change in ERV does not affect REIs, whereas a long-term positive change in ERV reduces such investments. Likewise, unfavorable short-term exchange rate shocks encourage REI while positive short-term shocks discourage such development. Moreover, investment in renewable energy is bolstered by GDP, environmental policy strictness, and financial development, but is dampened by CO2 emissions in the short term in both models. On the basis of these results, we suggest that policymakers should consider implementing measures to stabilize exchange rates to promote investment in renewable energy.

However, the research question that the past empirics have overlooked is whether ERV has any role in helping an emerging economy like China in its journey toward a renewable energy transition. To answer this question, this analysis intends to scrutinize the nexus between ERV and renewable energy investment (REI) in China over 1991Q1-2021Q4. Agriculture is the largest sector of Pakistan’s economy, contributing almost 22% to the GDP and employing almost 45% of the total labor force. The two largest food crops, wheat and rice, contribute 3.1% and 1.4% to the GDP, respectively. The objective of this research was to calculate the energy return on investment (EROI) of these crops on a national scale from 1999 to 2009 to understand the size of various energy inputs and to discuss their contributions to the energy output. Energy inputs accounted for within the cropping systems included seed, fertilizer, pesticide, human labor, tractor diesel, irrigation pump electricity and diesel, the transport of fertilizer and pesticide, and the embodied energy of tractors and irrigation pumps. The largest per-hectare energy inputs to wheat were nitrogen fertilizer (52.6%), seed (17.9%), and tractor diesel (9.1%). For rice, the largest per-hectare energy inputs were nitrogen fertilizer (32%), tube well diesel (19.8%), and pesticide (17.6%). The EROI of wheat showed a gradual downward trend between 2000 and 2006 of 21.3%. The trend was erratic thereafter. Overall, it ranged from 2.7 to 3.4 with an average of 2.9 over the 11-year study period. The overall trend was fairly consistent compared to that of rice which ranged between 3.1 and 4.9, and averaged 3.9. Rice’s EROI dipped sharply in 2002, was erratic, and remained below four until 2007. It rose sharply after that. As energy inputs increased, wheat outputs increased, but rice outputs decreased slightly. Rice responded to inputs with greater output and an increase in EROI. The same was not true for wheat, which showed little change in EROI in the face of increasing inputs. This suggests that additional investments of energy in rice production are not improving yields but for wheat, these investments are still generating benefits. The analysis shows quantitatively how fossil energy is a key driver of the Pakistani agricultural system as it traces direct and indirect energy inputs to two major food crops.

In this paper, a ferrofluid-based cooling technique is proposed for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, where ferrofluid flow can be easily altered by the application of an external magnetic field leading to enhanced heat transfer from the hot surface of PV systems. The effect of both constant and alternating magnetic field on ferrofluid flow through a minichannel is explored numerically in the present work. A detailed parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of actuation frequencies of alternating magnetic field (0.5–20 Hz) and Reynolds numbers (Re = 24, 60, and 100) on heat transfer characteristics of ferrofluid. An overall enhancement of 17.41% is observed for heat transfer of ferrofluid in the presence of magnetic field compared to the base case of no magnetic field. For the case of alternating magnetic field, a critical actuation frequency is observed for each Reynolds number above which heat transfer is observed to decrease. The enhancement or decrease in heat transfer of ferrofluid is found to depend on several factors such as actuation frequency of alternating magnetic field, Reynolds numbers of ferrofluid flow, and formation/dispersion of stagnant layers of ferrofluid at the magnet location. Preliminary visualization of ferrofluid flow is also carried out to provide a qualitative insight to the nature of transportation of ferrofluid in the presence of an alternating magnetic field.

The empirical findings suggest no short-run price transmission between world oil prices and stock sectors of Pakistan Stock Exchange. Only the past unexpected shocks in world oil prices has significant effect on the volatility of sectoral stock returns of Pakistan Stock Exchange, and no volatility spillover exist between world oil price and stock sectors. The optimal portfolio weights and hedge ratios for oil/stock holdings are sensitive to sectors considered. The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of pictured letters mnemonics strategy in learning similarEnglish language letters among students with learning disabilities in Saudi Arabia according to experimental group(1) and (2), control group, gender, and interaction between them. The study sample comprised (90) students withlearning disabilities who were randomly distributed to three equal groups. While the first experimental group wastaught using the modified letter method, the second experimental group was taught using the method of bothmodified and abstract letters, and the control group was taught in the traditional way. To measure the effectiveness ofthe strategy, the authors applied (pre, post, and follow-up) tests. As a result, two-way ANOVA indicated that therewere significant differences attributed to the teaching method, in favor of the method of both modified and abstractletters, while there were no statistically significant differences due to gender or interaction between the teachingmethod and gender. The same results were obtained from the follow-up test. Accordingly, a set of recommendationswere made.

The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of pictured letters mnemonics strategy in learning similarEnglish language letters among students with learning disabilities in Saudi Arabia according to experimental group(1) and (2), control group, gender, and interaction between them. The study sample comprised (90) students withlearning disabilities who were randomly distributed to three equal groups. While the first experimental group wastaught using the modified letter method, the second experimental group was taught using the method of bothmodified and abstract letters, and the control group was taught in the traditional way. To measure the effectiveness ofthe strategy, the authors applied (pre, post, and follow-up) tests. As a result, two-way ANOVA indicated that therewere significant differences attributed to the teaching method, in favor of the method of both modified and abstractletters, while there were no statistically significant differences due to gender or interaction between the teachingmethod and gender. The same results were obtained from the follow-up test. Accordingly, a set of recommendationswere made.

In this paper, we compare and benchmark two different approaches to non-linear topology optimization of District Heating Networks in terms of computational cost and optimality gap. The first approach solves a mixed-integer non-linear optimization problem that resolves the binary constraints of pipe routing choices using a combinatorial optimization approach. The second approach solves a relaxed optimization problem using an adjoint optimization approach, and enforces a discrete network topology through penalization. Our benchmark shows that the relaxed penalized problem has a polynomial computational cost scaling, while the combinatorial solution scales exponentially, making it intractable for practical-sized networks. We also evaluate the optimality gap between the two approaches on two different District Heating Network optimization cases. We find that the mixed-integer approach outperforms the adjoint approach on a single-producer case, but the relaxed penalized problem is superior on a multi-producer case. Based on this study, we discuss the importance of initialization strategies for solving the optimal topology and design problem of District Heating Networks as a non-linear optimization problem.

Based on the modern advancements in such techniques, the present paper provides a detailed comparison for finding the optimal control strategy using such techniques. This is exhibited by developing a novel control strategy in the form of a 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller for concurrent frequency-voltage control of a hybrid power system. The hybrid power system comprises of renewable generations in the form of solar-thermal, wind plants. Moreover, the modern day electric vehicles (EVs) are also incorporated as energy storage and operate in vehicle-to-grid mode. The developed control strategy is compared with established industrial controllers to prove its dominance based on concurrent frequency-voltage control of the hybrid power system. Firstly, the controller gains are optimized using magnetotactic bacteria optimization (MBO) technique. Then, the developed control strategy is tuned using artificial neural network (ANN) methodology. Based on the simulation outcomes, the results for frequency deviations, voltage deviations and tie-line power deviations are compared with MBO and ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller. The simulations are carried out on one-area, two-area and standard IEEE-39 bus power systems for in depth validation. Results show that the ANN optimized 2nd order active disturbance rejection controller has superior performance with respect to MBO optimized one. The effects of modern day EVs and renewable generations on the power system is studied broadly.

SummaryExtensive research and development in the processes of production and generation of hydrogen are needed to make renewable hydrogen cost‐competitive with fossil hydrogen. As a result, developing hydrogen energy from low‐cost components and synthesizing it from renewable resources is an important issue that can be considered a global challenge. The current research provided a continuous H2 energy production from waste aluminum in a water medium using copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) as catalysts in the reaction. CuO NPs have been prepared by a green, easy, inexpensive, and systematic method using Catha edulis L. (Khat) extract as reducing and capping agents. Separately, CuO NPs prepared in an alkaline media using the conventional hydrothermal process have been described and reported for comparison. Multidisciplinary tools were used to characterize the powders for structural, morphological, and surface aspects. CuO NPs were homogeneous, well‐dispersed, and have fine diameters with an average of 6 nm, owing to the abundant biomolecules in the plant extract. The synthesized samples were utilized as catalysts for H2 production from industrial waste aluminum with a 1/0.02 ration of Al/CuO by weight. The primary results revealed a higher H2 production yield and rapid rate in alkaline than acidic mediums. Under all conditions, the CuO NPs prepared from the extract had better catalytic activity than those prepared by a conventional method. The results proved that the reaction temperature prompts the reaction kinetics more than other parameters. The optimum H2 yield could be optimized at a temperature of 70°C, 1/50 ratio of CuO/waste Al, and near‐neutral solutions. The above conditions are ideal for designing a continuous production reactor. The hydrogen generated using industrial waste aluminum in the present system is a cost‐effective and sustainable approach.
